Vila Olímpica do Mato Alto will have karate representative at the Pan American Games in Santiago

Athletes from the Mato Alto Olympic Village in Praça Seca, who are part of the Brazilian karate team, achieved good results in the Pan American Karate Championship. The competition was held last week in San José, Costa Rica. They returned from the tournament with a bronze medal and a qualification for the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in addition to helping Brazil finish third overall in the competition.

– It is a joy to see athletes from the City Hall’s sports facilities representing the country and achieving significant results in competitions. Vila do Mato Alto is a hotbed of karatekas. We continue to invest in sports to develop more and more talents – stated the Municipal Secretary of Sports, Guilherme Schleder.

Three athletes from the Mato Alto Olympic Village took part in the championship. Juliana Oliveira won a bronze medal in the -50kg category. Kelly Fernandes qualified for the Pan American Games, which will take place between October and November of this year. Filipe Medeiros Gomes Alberto came in fifth place in the -84kg category.

The Rio City Hall sports equipment teacher and coach of the Brazilian adult karate team, Mauricio Santiago, was pleased with the athletes' performance.

– Our participation was excellent. I was acting as a coach and it was gratifying to see Kelly winning the qualifying round, securing a spot in the Pan American Games. Juliana winning a medal, beating excellent athletes, and by chance not making it to the final, after having been South American champion in the last tournament. And Filipe, who competes in a very competitive category and even losing third place, had great fights, beating the South American champion. His defeat was to the 2022 Pan American champion, in a close fight.
