Created in December 2022 with the aim of encouraging sustainability actions in the municipality, the Rio Circular Plastic Committee, the result of a partnership between the municipality and the European Union, began last week, during a meeting at Rio City Hall.
Representatives of the city's Integrated Planning and Sustainable Development Committee, the Planning Office of the Planning and Finance Secretariat and other municipal secretariats that are part of the initiative received leaders from the Circular Plastics in the Americas Program (CPAP), of the European Union, to discuss issues regarding waste generation, management of single-use plastic and the implementation of new programs to encourage the reduction of plastic consumption in the city.
During the meeting, participants analyzed the volume of waste generated during recent major events, such as New Year's Eve and Carnival, and discussed actions and programs that will be implemented in some communities in Rio in the future, such as Recicla Comunidade.
According to the General Coordinator of the Rio City Hall Planning Office, Daniel Mancebo, the actions developed by the Committee will be integrated into the economic, social and urban-environmental policies of the municipal administration:
– The Circular Plastic Committee for Rio reinforces the City’s commitment to supporting innovative initiatives that reduce waste generation and increase recycling and waste recovery, as recommended by our Sustainable Development and Climate Action Plan and Strategic Plan.
According to the coordinator of the Circular Plastics in the Americas program, Tathiana Colturato, pilot projects resulting from the innovation process, developed throughout 2022 with different partners in the city, were also presented during the meeting, with a focus on promoting tourism with a reduction in the consumption of single-use plastic.
– Rio’s support consolidates the city’s leadership in implementing a robust climate agenda with a focus on different sectors.
Circular Plastic Rio
The Rio Circular Plastic Committee includes the Planning and Finance, Environment and Community Action departments, and Comlurb. The initiative, the result of an international cooperation partnership between the municipal government and the European Union, integrates economic, social and urban-environmental policies for the management of plastic waste in the municipality.
One of the goals is to develop guidance and support actions for the sustainable production and consumption of different types of plastic in various parts of the city, such as waterfront kiosks, restaurants, hotels and events, supporting the construction of sustainable businesses and responsible tourists.
