- JUVRio and Women's Secretariat promote action on the menstrual cycle for young people from Rio
Kits delivered to young people at an event about the menstrual cycle - Disclosure / Rio City Hall The Feminine Cycle Pride event, held on Monday (23/08) and Tuesday (24/08), provided information to dozens of young people, in addition to breaking taboos about menstruation and promoting girls' access to sanitary pads. The initiative, a partnership between the Special Secretariats for Youth in Rio de Janeiro (JUVrio) and Women's Policies and Promotion (SPM-Rio), had the participation of health professionals, who provided information on protection, prevention and care for menstrual health.
The event took place on Monday at the headquarters of the Hoju Institute in Mangueira. On Tuesday, young people benefited from the Vila Olímpica Clara Nunes in Acari and the Miécimo da Silva Sports Center in Campo Grande. The girls also participated in discussion groups and received hygiene kits from JUVRio.
The Feminine Cycle Pride event raised awareness about menstrual poverty and the taboos surrounding women's periods. Day Medeiros, an art teacher and director of the JUVRio Study Center, mediated educational activities such as the painting workshop “If my uterus could talk?” and a discussion group about how women feel about their bodies, pains, and values. The group also presented the menstrual cup and the female condom, as well as the correct way to use them.
This initiative was supported by the Superintendence of Health Promotion and in partnership with the Association of Municipal, State and Federal Employees of Rio de Janeiro (Assist) and the Hoju Institute.
