On Women's Day, City Hall publishes decrees and announces protocols to give Cariocas a voice

On International Women's Day, celebrated this Monday (08/03), the City of Rio presents two decrees and 26 protocols of intent that will guarantee the creation and implementation of public policies for women in Rio. With a focus on social promotion and combating violence, they will be signed between the Special Secretariat for Women's Policies and Promotion and 18 other municipal secretariats, in addition to four sub-mayors, two public companies, an institute and a foundation. The proposals foresee actions that will take place this month, but others will be implemented throughout the administration.

Two permanent programs are created through decrees published in the Official Gazette this Monday: prevention and confrontation of harassment on public transport, in vehicles and at stations in the municipal system, and training and awareness-raising against violence against women and gender-based violence, within the scope of the City Hall.

To prevent harassment on public transport, actions are planned, such as campaigns to encourage victims to report cases, raise awareness among the population and strengthen City Hall channels, such as the 1746 Hotline, as a platform for contact, referral and dissemination of information on the subject. The other decree aims, for example, to train municipal employees so that they know how to identify and direct cases of violence against women.

The list of signed protocols also includes an agreement with the Infrastructure Secretariat to train women seeking jobs in the construction industry.

– There are many women, especially in the outskirts of cities, who are unaware of the existence of specialized services for them. In addition to publicizing and promoting them, we want to expand our capacity to work for the lives and advancement of these women through partnerships with the entire city government. The protocols are an initial step towards the actions themselves; they are part of an agenda of commitments – says the Secretary of Policies and Promotion of Women, Joyce Trindade.

 

Rio de Janeiro Women's Houses celebrates its fifth anniversary

Opened on March 8, 2016, the Casas da Mulher Carioca have been operating for 5 years in Realengo and Madureira, facing the challenge of restructuring and expanding their work. The two spaces are centers for citizenship, recovery and strengthening of women's self-esteem to defend their rights.

Collective activities are promoted in the homes (at the moment the meetings are online), training courses to expand women's access to income and the job market, education and professional guidance; access to leisure and cultural facilities and spaces, referrals to health services, education and other sectoral policies.

In addition, the units provide initial care and referral for women in situations of gender-based violence.

Even with the limitations imposed by the pandemic and with reduced activities, in January 2021 the houses carried out 822 services, covering more than 500 women.
