The elite division of GM-Rio – the Municipal Force – announces expansion of operations to the region between Avenida Presidente Vargas and Cinelândia.

Two days after initiating its preventive and visible policing operations in areas of the city with a high incidence of robberies and thefts, the Elite Division of the Rio Municipal Guard – Municipal Force announced its expansion of operations to the perimeter encompassing Avenida Presidente Vargas x Campo de Santana x Central do Brasil x Cinelândia, in the city center. The deployment of personnel in this region is scheduled for March 29th and will follow the operational logic of the first two areas (Bus Station x Terminal Gentileza x Leopoldina Station and Jardim de Alah), with actions taking place at times when crime mapping data indicates the highest numbers of these crimes.

The announcement was made at the CompStat Rio meeting, at the Operations and Resilience Center (COR-Rio), with the presence of Mayor Eduardo Paes, Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, Secretary of Urban Security Brenno Carnevale, and the Director-General of the Municipal Force, Aimée de La Torre.

– Our assessment of these first two days is positive. We will have a very calm process, even though the demand is high. Always based on data, goals, information and crime rates, always acting against robberies and thefts. We started with two areas, and it worked very well in these two days. We showed an example of an approach; this technology is a way to control security agents, but it is also a way to protect them. And it allows us to make assessments. The heart of this model is the weekly CompStat meetings. We are very optimistic, we announced the expansion and, every 15 days, we will expand further, reaching the West and North zones, serving the entire city – stated Eduardo Paes.

During the meeting, a presentation was also given analyzing the first days of policing by the Municipal Force. The Secretary of Urban Security, Brenno Carnevale, detailed how the agents operated, the use of body cameras, the integration between monitoring systems, and the deployment of personnel on the ground throughout those days. At the Coastal Base, in those first two days of operation, 1.300 hours of images were recorded by the agents' body cameras.

 

The Secretary of Urban Security showed two examples of actions taken by the agents. The first, with images from body cameras, was an approach to a motorcyclist riding without a license plate in the vicinity of Jardim de Alah. The other was an approach to two people acting suspiciously, under an overpass, in the area of ​​the Rio Bus Station x Gentileza Terminal x Leopoldina. They were in possession of illicit drugs. All were taken to the police station for the filing of a report.

– We have a very positive assessment of the performance of the Municipal Force agents in these first few days. More than making arrests, our goal is to reduce robbery and theft rates and increase the feeling of security in these areas. We believe that the preventive and proactive behavior of our teams can also be a factor in inhibiting these crimes. The receptiveness of the population has also been quite encouraging – highlighted Brenno Carnevale.

Nineteen other areas within the municipality have been designated to receive preventive and visible policing from the GM-Rio Elite Division. Implementation in these areas will occur gradually, following an order that will be established based on CompStat data.

"Our evaluations will be constant, both from an operational standpoint, regarding the deployment of our personnel, the performance of teams on the ground, the framework of directed missions, and the analysis of crime mapping data and other aspects that may influence preventive and visible policing work. Based on this information, we will define the next steps to be taken," emphasized the Secretary of Urban Security.
