Next Sunday (May 10th), agents will also begin operating in the neighborhoods of Botafogo and Flamengo, in the South Zone of the city - Photo: Marcos de Paula/Rio City Hall The Rio de Janeiro City Hall presented, this Tuesday (May 5th), during a CompStat Rio meeting, the performance report of the Elite Division of the GM-Rio – Municipal Force – during the 50 days of visible and preventive policing actions. Since March 15th, 392 arrests have been made for robberies, thefts, receiving stolen goods, among other crimes. The agents also seized and recovered 71 cell phones and 46 motorcycles.
— With planning and management in the area of security, the Elite Division of GM-Rio – Municipal Force made 392 arrests in the first 50 days without firing a single shot. This makes us proud. We are operating in areas of the city with the highest concentration of robberies and thefts, and we have achieved a significant result. — said Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere
The Municipal Force's operations began on March 15th and have been gradually expanded to other areas with a high incidence of these crimes, based on crime mapping analysis.
— More than 2 preventive approaches have already been made, resulting in almost 400 arrests and the detention of suspects and criminals. Primarily, those approached and arrested for crimes such as theft, robbery, receiving stolen goods, and tampering with vehicle license plates. Several motorcycles and cell phones have been recovered. The Municipal Force acts with a strong focus on prevention, conducting approaches with agents monitored by body cameras and GPS, precisely to provide greater security for the population — stated the Special Secretary for Urban Security, Brenno Carnevale.
Data from the first month of operations in the area encompassing Avenida Presidente Vargas, Campo de Santana, Central do Brasil, and Cinelândia in downtown Rio were also presented. This region, which experiences high pedestrian traffic and a high rate of robberies and thefts, began receiving police patrols from these agents on March 29th.
Over the course of these 30 days, policing actions in the area resulted in 117 arrests, the seizure of three replica firearms, and the recovery of 31 cell phones.
In total, 22 areas with a high incidence of robberies and thefts were mapped throughout the city. With operations already established in five of these areas, the teams will begin a new phase of expansion next Sunday, May 10th, with the inclusion of three new areas in Botafogo, in the South Zone.
The expansion includes the areas of Rua Lauro Müller x Rua General Severiano x Av. Venceslau Brás; the area surrounding the Botafogo Metro station, including Rua São Clemente, Rua Voluntários da Pátria and cross streets; as well as the axis of Praia de Botafogo x Rua Marquês de Abrantes, in the access to the Flamengo neighborhood.
