Mangue Canal receives cleaning service in downtown Rio

The Rio-Águas Foundation, linked to the Municipal Infrastructure Department, is working on cleaning the Mangue Canal, in the city center. In preparation for Carnival, the services are benefiting the stretch of Avenida Presidente Vargas, between the Zumbi dos Palmares monument and the vicinity of Rio City Hall. The drainage networks of the streets around the Sambadrome were also cleaned to prevent flooding in the region.

The work on the river is being carried out with the help of a hydraulic excavator and trucks, and is being carried out at night to avoid impacts on traffic. To carry out the work, one lane of Avenida Presidente Vargas must be closed between 22 pm and 5 am, in the direction of Candelária, next to the canal. The work is expected to be completed in the first half of February.

– The Mangue Canal is a historic watercourse. It is important for draining the city’s central region, especially near Marquês de Sapucaí. We carry out this service annually to prevent flooding in the summer and in preparation for Carnival – highlights the president of the Rio-Águas Foundation, Marcelo Sepúlvida.

The Mangue Canal is 2,7 kilometers long and drains part of the city center and Tijuca. The Papa-couve, Comprido and Maracanã rivers flow directly into this canal.

Services completed on roads around the Sambadrome

In addition to the work on the canal, the Rio-Águas Foundation teams have just completed cleaning the drains and drainage networks on the streets surrounding the Sambadrome. The work benefited ten streets in the region, such as Salvador de Sá Avenue, Trinta e Um de Março Avenue, Travessa Onze de Maio Avenue, Benedito Hipólito Street, Catumbi Street, Carolina Reidner Street, Frei Caneca Street, among others. The workers cleaned the drains manually and with the help of four vacuum trucks, which can suck the materials from the galleries. Around 300 drains were also unblocked.

In December, the first stage of the work was completed. Unblocking services were carried out on the internal networks of the Passarela do Samba and on the Rio Papa-couve gallery, which runs under Rua Marquês de Sapucaí.
