- The city government is moving forward with the PAC Realengo works and reaching Vila Vintém.
Project for the swimming pool to be built in Realengo - Reproduction The Rio de Janeiro City Hall continues to advance with flood control works in Realengo. This Sunday (November 16th), new work fronts reached Vila Vintém. The interventions are part of the PAC Realengo program, which carries out extensive drainage works in the neighborhood, in the West Zone.
– We are seeking to solve the city's most structural problems. We built the flood control basin in Praça da Bandeira, Jacarepaguá, and now our focus is Realengo, including Vila Vintém. We will also carry out works in Jardim Maravilha, in Guaratiba, and in Acari. It is a set of important drainage works to solve the flooding problem – stated the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes.
A new drainage system is being implemented, which will mitigate the problems caused by flooding on rainy days in the neighborhood. Work began in mid-July on Rua do Imperador, Rua Bernardo de Vasconcelos, and Avenida Santa Cruz. Rua do Imperador has already received new drainage and was paved last week. Work continues on the remaining streets. In total, more than five kilometers of new storm drains will be built to reduce flooding.
"This project is the result of a great deal of political coordination and management," said Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.
The new work front will begin on Rua Barão do Triunfo, and the interventions will continue towards Vila Vintém, with drainage works and improvements to the Catarino River. A second gallery will be installed to improve the flow of the river's waters, reinforcing its drainage capacity. This auxiliary gallery will be installed under Rua Barão do Triunfo, Rua Petrópolis, Rua Baião, and Travessa do Imperador. All these actions will directly benefit the Vila Vintém community.
– We divided the large flood control project in Realengo into three areas. This intervention here in the Vila Vintém region aims to create a gallery to divert part of the Catarino River. And we will still have other major actions such as the construction of a reservoir larger than the retention basin in Praça da Bandeira to bring safety and resilience to the greater Realengo region – explained the Secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson Santos.

As part of the program, the region will also gain a flood control basin, larger than the reservoir at Praça da Bandeira. It will have the capacity to accumulate approximately 20 million liters of water, equivalent to 20 one-thousand-liter water tanks. The construction will serve to contain the waters of the Piraquara River, another important river for drainage in the region during heavy rains.
In total, the project will benefit approximately 205 residents of the neighborhood, according to data from the latest Census. The works are being carried out by the Rio-Águas Foundation, and the investments amount to approximately R$ 123,5 million, with resources from the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Cities, which coordinates the New PAC program, and Caixa Econômica Federal.
