The Rio City Hall, through the Municipal Guard, is participating in the Lei Seca operation, which returns to the city streets this Thursday, the 8th. In total, eight guards from the Special Traffic Group (GET) are working at four points where the blitzes were set up, which had been suspended since March 18th due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

Municipal guards will monitor traffic violations committed by drivers before they are stopped by military police and DMV agents. The most common violations include driving on the wrong side of the road, driving up onto the sidewalk or median, and evading checkpoints.

According to the Brazilian Traffic Code (Law 9.503 of 1997), driving under the influence of alcohol is considered a very serious offense, with a fine of R$2.934,70, suspension of the right to drive for 12 months, and the loss of 7 points on the driver's license. The vehicle is also impounded until another licensed driver who is able to drive comes forward to pick it up. In the event of a repeat offense within 12 months, the fine is doubled to R$5.869,40.
