Municipal Guard has carried out more than 19 thousand actions in the city since the beginning of the year

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Guard, has carried out 19.157 actions in the city since the beginning of the year. These include measures to combat the novel coronavirus pandemic, inspections of municipal regulations, various types of assistance to the population, action in the event of crimes and misdemeanors, among others. The survey covers the months of January to July and was prepared by the Municipal Guard Operations Directorate.

The ten neighborhoods with the highest number of registered demands were Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca, Centro, Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Campo Grande, Bangu, Tijuca, Méier and Leblon. Of the more than 19 thousand records, around 34% occurred on public roads, 25% on the seafront, beach, canal, river or lake and 17% in public places.

 

 

During patrols on public roads and beaches in the city, the Municipal Guard was called out 406 times for incidents involving crimes and misdemeanors. Of this total, 97 cases were reported involving robberies and thefts (such as cell phones) on public transport, public roads, commercial establishments and homes. In addition, the guards were called out for other incidents: 63 cases involving abandoned vehicles or vehicles recovered during inspection operations; 54 cases involving animal cruelty; nine cases of mistreatment; seven cases of embezzlement; seven cases of drunk driving; four cases of violence against women; two cases of assistance to victims of indecent assault; one case of sexual harassment and one case of rape.

 

 

The agents also responded to 354 incidents of run-overs, 163 cases of support for traffic accidents, 213 cases of shelter for homeless people, among other incidents. The figures also include around 1700 cases of assistance to the population in the city, which includes assistance to people who fell on the street or became ill and were taken to nearby hospitals, assistance to national and foreign tourists, location of people lost on the beaches, among other measures.

Actions during the pandemic

Of the total of 19.157 actions, more than 12 were carried out in support of the City of Rio, focusing on the novel coronavirus pandemic. Since March, the Municipal Guard has been mobilized to support the city in measures to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus. These actions include health inspections (such as the use of face masks), responding to complaints registered at the “Disk Aglomeração” (Central 1746), controlling partial blockades in shopping centers in 13 neighborhoods, monitoring bathers on the beaches, and raising awareness among the population through audio messages broadcast by patrol cars with tips and guidance on how to prevent the spread of the virus.

Environment

The Municipal Guard recorded 1693 actions related to the environment from January to July. The work is carried out by the Environmental Patrol, formed by municipal guards from the Environmental Defense Group (GDA) and inspectors from the Municipal Department of the Environment (SMAC). Of this total, more than 838 include rescues of wild animals such as birds, capybaras, opossums, snakes and alligators. In addition, it includes responding to calls for illegal pruning and felling of trees, air, noise and water pollution, illegal burning, among other inspection actions contained in environmental legislation.

– During this pandemic, the Municipal Guard is committed to supporting Rio’s City Hall departments, and this has led to a large number of actions throughout the city. We have done this without neglecting the other functions that are part of our responsibilities, such as monitoring municipal regulations and the environment. All of this without counting the traffic operations, where we work daily. This shows that the Municipal Guard is on the side of the people of Rio and ready to provide the necessary response to maintain order in the city – stated the commander of the Municipal Guard, Inspector General José Ricardo Soares.

One of the main functions of the Municipal Guard, the monitoring of municipal regulations, has resulted in 2.339 actions in the city since January. Among the measures, the work carried out by the Zero Waste Program, in partnership with Comlurb, stands out, which recorded more than 1.400 infractions related to urban cleaning.
