On Monday morning (10/2), municipal guards participated in a training session on rescuing marine animals for members of the Environmental Defense (GDA), Special Beach (GEP) and Municipal Maritime Guard (GMM) groups. Every day, these agents are on the city's coastline, in parks and environmental preservation areas and, in many cases, they are the ones who rescue these types of animals or protect the place where they were found until the competent agencies arrive. The initiative took place in the auditorium of the Academia Ensino, at the headquarters of the Municipal Guard, in São Cristóvão.
The instruction was given by representatives of the NGO Econservation, which works with environmental studies and projects. Biologists Keity Nishikawa, Caio da Cruz and Bárbara Keity explained the importance of saving marine animals that are found stranded or weakened on the city's coast.
They also described the procedures that should be taken immediately after the rescue, such as protecting them from the sun and not trying to pull out objects such as hooks or even kite strings. The agents had the opportunity to clarify doubts based on personal experiences, such as in the case of the sea lion that appeared in December on the sand of Ipanema Beach. The Municipal Guard teams worked together with several agencies to keep the area where the animal was isolated until it decided to move on to other beaches.
