Alligator will be returned to nature, in Marapendi Lagoon. Photo: Disclosure/Municipal Guard The Rio City Hall, through the Municipal Guard and the Municipal Secretariat of the Environment, carried out this Tuesday (13/10) the rescue of an alligator measuring approximately 2 meters in the backyard of a house in the Tanque neighborhood, West Zone of Rio.
A resident of Estrada Comandante Luiz Souto, in Tanque, saw an alligator this morning coming out of a canal in the region and heading towards the lane reserved for cars. The man then decided to catch the animal himself, so that it would not be run over, and took it to the backyard of his residence and called the environmental patrol, through the City Hall's Central 1746.
The agents arrived at the man's residence in the afternoon and rescued the alligator. Since the animal was healthy, the environmental patrol team will return it to the wild, in Lagoa de Marapendi, in Barra da Tijuca.
The environmental patrol is made up of inspectors from the Municipal Department of the Environment and municipal guards from the Environmental Defense Group. The City of Rio advises the public to call the patrol by dialing 1746 if they spot wild animals in urban areas in the city of Rio or in any risky situation outside their habitat for safe rescue. Handling them is not advisable, much less trying to scare them away, as this can aggravate any injuries the animals may have. The 1746 hotline is open 24 hours a day.
