Environmental patrol rescues penguin on São Conrado Beach

The Rio City Hall, through municipal guards and agents from the Municipal Secretariat of the Environment, rescued a penguin on the night of this Monday (31/08) that appeared on São Conrado Beach, in the South Zone of Rio.

Found by beachgoers playing volleyball on the beach, the animal was rescued after the environmental patrol received the request registered at Central 1746. The team received the penguin and took it to the environmental patrol base, where it will remain under the care of environmental agents during the early hours of the morning.

The Santos Basin Beach Monitoring Project team has already been called and will take the penguin on Tuesday morning, the 1st, to be examined by a veterinarian and will stay in a suitable place until its recovery.

This is the sixth penguin rescued by agents on Rio's coast since July. The other five cases occurred on the beaches of Barra da Tijuca and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, on June 27 and 28; July 7, 12 and 27, respectively.

The environmental patrol is made up of inspectors from the Municipal Department of the Environment and municipal guards from the Environmental Defense Group. The City of Rio advises the public to call the patrol by dialing 1746 if they spot wild animals in urban areas in the city of Rio or in any risky situation outside their habitat for safe rescue. Handling them is not advisable, much less trying to scare them away, as this can aggravate any injuries the animals may have. The 1746 hotline operates 24 hours a day.
