- Rio City Hall begins construction of Morar Carioca in Morro do Queto, in Sampaio

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes began this Saturday (7/6) the works of the Morar Carioca program in the communities of Morro da Matriz and Morro do Queto, in Sampaio, in the North Zone, which will benefit 3.221 people, living in 835 homes. Then, accompanied by Vice Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, he inaugurated works of the Bairro Maravilha program, which revitalized and urbanized the communities of Morro do Chaves, in Barros Filho, and Eternit, in Barros Filho, also in the North Zone.
— The goal is to transform and urbanize the community with Morar Carioca. Therefore, we will have discussions with the residents' association and the Housing Department so that we can adjust the project and make further improvements. Our goal is to provide dignity and improve people's quality of life in the same way we do with the Bairro Maravilha program, which we are launching today in communities in the North Zone — said Mayor Eduardo Paes.
The works in the favelas of Morro da Matriz and Morro do Queto will cover a total area of more than 83 thousand square meters, where a leisure and landscaping area will be built, with tree planting, and water, drainage and sewage systems. In addition, there will be paving and slope containment works, as well as the installation of public lighting. The investment is R$ 22 million.
Morar Carioca, the largest community urbanization program in the country's history, has benefited approximately 60 residents over the last five years. The program goes beyond promoting the urbanization of streets and leisure areas; it also includes all basic public services and projects that ensure quality of life, urban quality and social interaction for residents.
— This is a revolutionary program that has already impacted more than 20 communities and has come to transform the lives of the families who live in them — stated the Secretary of Housing, Diego Zeidan.
After starting the Morar Carioca project in Sampaio, the mayor inaugurated the revitalized areas of the communities of Morro do Chaves, in Barros Filho, and Eternit, in Guadalupe, in the North Zone. The interventions are part of the Bairro Maravilha program, of the Municipal Infrastructure Department. In total, 33 residential streets were benefited with paving, basic sanitation and sidewalks.
In Morro do Chaves, the project involved an investment of R$5,2 million and included five public areas: Rua São Salvador, Travessa Capineira (section), Access to Rua São Salvador, Travessa Garcia and the area around the Football Field. More than 9,2 square meters of public area were restored by the City Hall. 1,4 meters of drainage, 847 meters of drinking water networks, 713 meters of sewage, 7,5 square meters of asphalt paving and 1,4 square meters of sidewalks were built. The works ensured greater mobility, sanitation and comfort for residents.
In the Eternit community in Barros Filho, R$6,1 million was invested in the requalification of 19 streets, with 7,4 square meters of reurbanized area. The intervention included 965 meters of drainage, 933 meters of water supply network, 1 meters of sewage network, 6 square meters of smooth asphalt and 1,4 square meters of public sidewalk, providing significant improvements to the local urban infrastructure.
– This is a region that needs investment, and the City of Rio has been making these investments. We are attentive to the needs of these communities, and it is very gratifying to return and inaugurate more projects in the North Zone of the city. Mainly, to see the smiles on people’s faces and how much these projects positively impact their lives — highlighted Vice Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.
More than R$1,2 billion invested and 267 thousand people benefited from the Bairro Maravilha program. Since its resumption in 2021, the program has transformed 61 locations in the city of Rio. There are 54 projects completed in the West Zone, in neighborhoods such as Guaratiba, Campo Grande and Santa Cruz, and seven in the North Zone, including interventions in Encantado, Rocha Miranda, Barros Filho, Madureira and Ramos. Currently, 24 work fronts are underway, totaling an investment of over R$1,2 billion. In total, more than 285 kilometers of urbanization have already been completed by the program, with a direct impact on urban mobility, road safety, flood prevention and real estate appreciation.
