Rio de Janeiro City Hall begins Morar Carioca construction in a community on Ilha do Governador.

Investment represents dignity, security, and access to basic rights for nearly 3,2 people - Iago Campos/City Hall Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere launched the first phase of integrated urbanization works in the Vila Nova Canaã favela, on Ilha do Governador, this Sunday (April 19). More than just cement and asphalt, the R$ 23.109 million investment by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall represents dignity, security, and access to basic rights for nearly 3,200 people in 781 households.
"Our basic premise at the city hall is to improve people's lives through public policies. And the Morar Carioca project represents this objective we pursue well," emphasized the mayor of Rio.
The works in the community are part of the Morar Carioca program, executed by the Municipal Housing Secretariat (SMH). The first stage will cover an area of 87.770 square meters with the implementation of a water supply network, sewage system, drainage network, paving, lighting, signage, landscaping, and equipment for solid waste collection.
A significant portion of the project will focus on constructing recreational areas and installing street furniture. Residents will enjoy communal areas, an outdoor gym for seniors, a children's playground, a community barbecue area, an amphitheater, a multi-sports court, and a walking track.
The works have a 20-month execution period. The initiative is part of the municipality's housing policy, which understands housing as a basic right and relies on urbanization as an instrument for social inclusion and dignity. With this initiative, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall reinforces its commitment to the urbanization of vulnerable areas and the promotion of equity in access to the city. The expectation is to transform the daily lives of residents, with adequate infrastructure, greater security, and increased property value.
"It's very gratifying to see how this project will transform the Vila Nova Canaã community, bringing more dignity, infrastructure, and quality of life to families. The effort we are making is yielding results in improving the favelas of Rio de Janeiro," stated the Municipal Secretary of Housing, Cláudio Dutra.
A second phase of construction in the Vila Nova Canaã community is currently in the project development stage.

Morar Carioca is the largest favela urbanization program in the country. It promotes the urbanization of streets and leisure areas, adding a range of improvements in health, education and other basic public services, in addition to bringing citizenship and dignity to a portion of the population living in vulnerable areas.
The projects include water and sewage networks, drainage, public lighting, paving and slope containment, as well as landscaping, health facilities, education, culture and leisure.
Since 2021, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall has invested a total of R$ 873,653 million in Morar Carioca projects across all regions of Rio, including completed projects, projects underway, and projects about to begin. Nine other initiatives under the program are currently in the bidding phase.
