- Maravilha neighborhood transforms streets in Cidade de Deus and Itanhangá with urbanization works

Rio's mayor, Eduardo Paes, and vice-mayor Eduardo Cavaliere handed over, this Saturday (05/07), two more works from the Bairro Maravilha program. The beneficiaries were the Casinha Nova complex, in Cidade de Deus, and five streets in Itanhangá, including Terezinha Branco and Caminho do Bicão.
The Maravilha Neighborhood is a program that urbanizes streets and brings quality of life to residents. In total, 48 residential streets were completely revitalized in the two locations. Residents now have access to paved roads, reconstructed sidewalks and a modern drainage system, improvements that totaled an investment of R$28 million.
– This is a project that, in addition to the concrete improvements, with the paving of streets, new sidewalks and a new drainage system, gives dignity to people. Because they no longer have to walk in mud, or have sewage gushing out of their front doors. That is why it receives special attention from the city government – said the mayor of Rio.
In Cidade de Deus, the works covered 43 public spaces in the Casinha Nova complex, including Rua do Amor, Rua Deus Conosco and Rua Alegria. The project included the installation of 616 meters of stormwater drains, 19 thousand square meters of asphalt and 6,7 thousand square meters of accessible sidewalks. The interventions improve the drainage of rainwater and ensure greater mobility and safety for those living in the community. The services are still ongoing at five other addresses in the region.
In Itanhangá, the streets Terezinha Branco and Caminho do Bicão, crossings 1 and 2 and the Access were refurbished. The improvements involved the installation of 715 meters of drainage, 1,1 meters of drinking water network, 910 meters of treated sewage network, 3,6 square meters of paving and 1,3 square meters of renovated sidewalks.
- This is another phase of the Bairro Maravilha program, which is transforming the reality of these areas with paving and water and sewage systems. This transformation began during the first term of Mayor Eduardo Paes throughout the Muzema region. We are delivering five more streets to provide dignity and quality of life to the population – explained the municipal secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson dos Santos.
Housewife Fabia Maria Nobre, 52, resident of Muzema, said how important the works were, especially because she suffered on days of heavy rain.
-The sewage system was open. Rats would get into the house. When it rained, the water would flood. With the works, the situation has improved completely – revealed Fabia.
Created to transform the areas that suffered most from the lack of investment, Bairro Maravilha is currently the largest urban redevelopment program underway in the city of Rio. Since 2021, 62 projects have been completed in the North and West zones of the city, while another 22 are still underway. More than R$1,2 billion has been invested in drainage, paving, sidewalks and accessibility.
More than just urban improvements, the program brings dignity, security and quality of life to thousands of families in Rio, helping to reduce inequalities and promote citizenship with real infrastructure.
-The works brought basic sanitation, which we didn't have before. It was a terrible smell. During storms, residents asked for almost everything. But now, the streets aren't flooded - celebrated pastor Henan Orquera, 51, who lives with his family in Muzema.
