The city of Rio will have over 80 thousand LED light points, in addition to the 457 thousand new luminaires already installed

Rio de Janeiro already has 457 LED street lights installed throughout the city, exceeding the initial expectation of 450 set out in the City Hall’s Public-Private Lighting Partnership contract. During the process of modernizing the city’s lighting, Rioluz identified an additional 80 new light points that needed to be serviced. Due to this update to the initial project, the contract was recently rebalanced and these excess points were included. The partnership foresees an investment of R$1,4 billion in modernizing the city’s lighting.

– At the time the contract was signed with the sub-concessionaire Smart Luz, Rioluz had a registry with a total of 450 light points throughout the city. And the scope of the PPP included updating this number. As the work to modernize the lighting began, we identified more points to be serviced and today we have 532 light points. By the end of the year, we will transform the city into an LED Rio – stated Rioluz president Eduardo Feital.

The posts that have not yet been modernized will be covered by the PPP during the term of the partnership. The contract provides for the replacement of steel posts with new fiber posts, which are more durable and resistant to electrical discharges. In total, 34.500 fiber posts will be installed in squares, bike paths and parks. The PPP will last 20 years and provides support for the maintenance and operation of all equipment.

During this process of modernizing the city's public lighting system, the PPP has been facing a harsh reality: theft of cables and light fixtures, which interrupts service and harms citizens. To give you an idea of ​​the financial loss, from January to July, more than R$6 million was spent on repairing cables and replacing light fixtures stolen from the network. In order to prevent these acts, Rioluz, through its concessionaire Smart Luz, implemented some anti-theft measures in several critical points of the city, such as Linha Vermelha, Avenida Brasil, Túnel Velho, São Cristóvão, the Maracanã region, among other places that are constant targets of criminals. As crime reinvents itself, the PPP has been studying other mechanisms and special projects to protect the electrical grid from vandalism.
