Luz Maravilha begins installing two thousand LED luminaires on the Red Line

One of the largest roads in and out of the city of Rio has started receiving the Luz Maravilha Program, a public-private partnership for public lighting in the city. Last Friday (July 02), the installation of LED lights began along the 07-kilometer stretch of the Linha Vermelha highway. The expressway, which crosses three municipalities and 21 neighborhoods, suffers from constant cable thefts, leaving it in the dark. By the end of the year, approximately two thousand lights and 14 thousand meters of cable will be replaced.

In this first stage, services will begin on a six-kilometer stretch between the exit of the Rebouças Tunnel, on the Paulo de Frontin Elevated Highway, and Campo de São Cristóvão. Over the course of the months, until December, the entire route will be improved.

 

– We have already started work to improve the lighting on one of Rio de Janeiro’s main access roads. The new technology will provide greater safety and comfort for drivers – said Rioluz president Bruno Bonetti.

 

The Luz Maravilha program can already be seen in all regions of the city, with almost half of these LED installations in Rio de Janeiro communities. Rocinha, the largest favela in Latin America, is already 70% lit with the new technology. By the end of 2022, the entire city will be better lit with 450 LED lights. This transformation will generate savings of around 60% for the city.

 

– We are fulfilling one of the initial criteria of Luz Maravilha, which is to illuminate the most insecure areas of the city. The Linha Vermelha passes through almost 20 underprivileged communities. We hope that with the illuminated road we can generate more safety, both for drivers and residents – explained the Secretary of Infrastructure, Kátia Souza.

 

Operations Center will be expanded with the arrival of Luz Maravilha

 

The implementation of Luz Maravilha will bring another great benefit to the people of Rio. The Rio Operations Center (COR), a monitoring center for the entire city and which integrates more than 30 agencies, will be expanded by 1.400 square meters, which represents an increase of approximately 50% in relation to the total constructed area currently. The entire project will be funded 100% by the PPP, with completion scheduled for March 2022, including the construction and purchase stages, installation and configuration of new equipment, as well as usability tests and fine adjustments.

The Luz Maravilha Operational Control Center will operate at COR and will be implemented within the Smart City concept. The following will be installed: 10 security cameras, 40% of which will have facial recognition technology; 5.000 Wi-Fi points; 4.000 solid waste sensors in manholes; and 6.000 traffic signal sensors to improve traffic flow.

The Luz Maravilha program is an initiative of the City of Rio, through the Infrastructure Department and Rioluz, and is a public policy that was made possible by a concession and established through a public-private partnership. The goal is to modernize and make the city's entire public lighting system more efficient. The program also includes the modernization of all Rioluz streetlights, which account for 15% of the city's existing streetlights.

 

Partial bans

 

Until August 16th, CET-Rio will partially close the Rufino Pizarro and Engenheiro Freyssinet Elevated Roads for public lighting services, except on Fridays and Saturdays, from 08:21 pm to 30 am. It will be necessary to close one lane (left side), in both directions of the elevated roads. The closures will be itinerant and in sections shorter than 5 meters.

The diversions will be carried out on the track itself, in the narrow section.

The interventions will involve the participation of CET-Rio traffic operators who will work to maintain fluidity, carry out blockages and guide drivers during the procedures. Specific signage will be installed to guide and alert drivers.
