Luz Maravilha: modernization of the city’s public lighting exceeds a third of the initial target

Luz Maravilha has just surpassed the milestone of 150 light points installed throughout the city of Rio. With this number, the program surpasses one third of the initial goal established by the Public Private Partnership (PPP) of the City of Rio, which foresees the replacement of the city's 450 light points with LED lamps.

The program reached all regions of the city simultaneously in 11 months of management. In addition to replacing sodium vapor lights, all lighting and maintenance services for the city's light points are included. The services will be delivered by the end of 2022, but the PPP will last 20 years and provides support for the maintenance and operation of all equipment.

The first location to be completed was Complexo do Alemão, in the Leopoldina Zone. All 5.283 light points were delivered in September. Among the highlights of the region, which is surrounded by six other neighborhoods in the North Zone, are the cable car stations and the Nave do Conhecimento, in Nova Brasília. In total, 15 communities are served and more than 60 thousand residents benefited, according to estimates from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Since the beginning of this administration, Luz Maravilha has established criteria for its implementation that take into account the Human Development Index (HDI), crime rates, the rate of deletions and the regions of greatest social vulnerability. For this reason, the program was launched in places such as Rio das Pedras, Muzema and Antares. Some neighborhoods that stand out are Rocinha (2.568 modernized points), Pavuna (4.996), Copacabana (3.951), Campo Grande (7.214) and Barra da Tijuca (9.684).

The PPP also includes the implementation of Smart City, a technology arm of the Luz Maravilha program that will install 10 security cameras, 40% of which will have facial recognition; five thousand Wi-Fi hotspots, which will enable one million residents of Rio to connect simultaneously; and ten thousand sensors with different specificities, such as rain and traffic control. In addition, the new COR will be delivered in the first half of 2022. Construction has already begun and the Operations Center will receive new equipment to monitor the city.

The partnership has also begun replacing steel posts with new fiberglass posts, which are more durable and resistant to electrical discharges. In total, 34.500 posts will be installed in squares, cycle paths and parks. In addition, the maintenance costs of the lights are covered, as well as 163 special lighting projects in tourist attractions, squares and urban parks.
