Luz Maravilha exceeds half the target with more than 225 thousand LED points installed in the city

LED-lit Rio waterfront - Fabio Motta / Rio City Hall The Luz Maravilha program has just reached two important milestones in its action schedule: in addition to delivering the Santa Bárbara Tunnel 100% modernized, it surpassed the mark of 225 thousand points installed with LED lamps throughout the city. With this number, it surpasses half of the initial goal established by the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) of the city of Rio, which foresees the replacement of the entire public lighting system, with the replacement of 450 thousand streetlights in the city.
Luz Maravilha has already reached all regions of Rio de Janeiro simultaneously. The Santa Bárbara Tunnel, an important connection between the neighborhoods of Catumbi and Laranjeiras, is one of the most recent deliveries of the program. The galleries were modernized in both directions, with the replacement of 862 street lights with LED bulbs.
The Noel Rosa Tunnel is also receiving the new technology and will be ready in March. The replacement has already occurred on other high-traffic roads, such as the Rebouças, Zuzu Angel and Rafael Mascarenhas tunnels, as well as the Linha Vermelha and the Presidente Vargas avenues, in the city center, and Menezes Cortes, known as the Grajaú-Jacarepaguá Highway. The Copacabana and Praia Vermelha waterfronts are also 100% LED-equipped.
The first location delivered, in September 2021, was Complexo do Alemão, in the Leopoldina Zone, with the modernization of 5.283 light points in 15 communities in the region. More than 60 thousand residents benefited, according to estimates from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Smart City
The PPP contract includes the creation of Smart Rio, a technology system that will encompass remote management and smart city services, and the expansion of the Operations and Resilience Center (COR), a space that will be modernized to better serve the population. The remote management services include the installation of 10.002 monitoring cameras, the implementation of 5.001 Wi-Fi access points, 4 retention and waste management sensors, and 6 traffic light sensors, which will contribute to improving public safety and urban mobility in the city.
In addition to replacing the sodium vapor luminaires, the PPP includes all lighting and maintenance services for the city's light points. Delivery will be made by the end of 2022, but the PPP will last 20 years and provides support for the maintenance and operation of all equipment.
The partnership will also include replacing steel posts with new fiberglass ones, which are more durable and resistant to electrical discharges. In total, there will be 34.500 posts spread across squares, cycle paths and parks. In addition, the maintenance costs of the lights will be covered, as well as 161 special lighting projects in tourist attractions, squares and urban parks.
