- Morar Carioca do Aço already benefits 176 families with furnished apartments
Another 80 furnished apartments were delivered to families in the community - Marcelo Alvarenga/City Hall of Rio On Saturday (17/5), Rio de Janeiro City Hall delivered new housing units from the Morar Carioca do Aço program in Santa Cruz, in the West Zone. Another 80 furnished apartments were delivered to families living in vulnerable conditions, consolidating the progress of one of the largest public urbanization and housing policies currently underway in the city. In total, 176 families have already benefited from the project, which is coordinated by the Municipal Urbanization Company (Rio-Urbe), an agency linked to the Municipal Infrastructure Department.
Upon arriving in Aço, Mayor Eduardo Paes, accompanied by First Lady Cristine Paes and Vice Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, among other authorities, visited the family of Lucas Andrey, 10, who will live in an apartment on the third floor. The boy's story is intertwined with that of the redevelopment of the Aço community. In 2020, he had an accident in a manhole on the street where he lived in the region, an incident that ended up contributing to the beginning of the community's transformation works. Now, he will live in a furnished apartment with his mother Marcia Regina Gomes, 46, his father Roberto Carlos, 58, and four other siblings.
– Today is a very special day. I have come here before to deliver apartments and it is great to see your dreams come true. In 2020, Lucas fell into a hole and spent two weeks in the ICU, and I committed to taking care of the Lucases in Rio de Janeiro. We have to take care of everyone, but what we need to ensure is that our children, our sons, have a better future than we did. I am sure that Lucas and his family, with this opportunity, with their own home, will have a better life, as he turned 10 this week. It is great to be able to bring hope to your lives – said Mayor Eduardo Paes, who led a song of congratulations to Lucas.
Housewife, Marcia Regina celebrated her family's moment of receiving their new home.
– I am very happy and grateful for the new house, especially after everything my son went through when he fell into the sewer. Now my family has the dignity to live. A house in our name, leaving behind the place where we lived, in the sewer, with leaks when it rained, water entering the houses. Now it is only gratitude, not only from us, but from all the residents.
The new units are part of Blocks 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, of Block F of the housing complex. In total, eleven blocks have already been completed and occupied: blocks 1, 2, 3, 9, 10 and 11 had already been delivered between June and December 2024. The families contemplated are now beginning a new stage in their lives, with access to structured housing, public services and complete infrastructure.
In addition to the delivery of the new furnished units, the Aço community received a new water reservoir with a capacity of 3,5 million liters this weekend. The reservoir, which will serve not only the apartments, but also the community, has begun its operation in a test phase.
Program plans to serve 704 families in total
With investments exceeding R$240 million, the Morar Carioca do Aço program foresees the construction of 704 apartments distributed across 44 buildings. The homes are approximately 50 square meters in size and have a living room, kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms, balcony and service area. Each building has four floors, with four apartments per floor, totaling 16 units per block. The ground floor apartments were designed to guarantee full accessibility, ensuring inclusion and mobility for residents with disabilities or reduced mobility. Approximately four thousand people will benefit from the new residences.
The program is not limited to the construction of these housing units, as it also encompasses the urban transformation of an area of 195 square meters, with infrastructure works and the implementation of essential services. Rua São Gomário, one of the main roads in the region, for example, will be requalified in a 1,1 km stretch until the connection with Avenida Cesário de Melo.
The ongoing interventions also include the implementation of 70 thousand square meters of paved roads, 2,2 km of cycle paths, 720 new public lighting points, 9 km of sewage network with pumping station and 10 km of water supply networks.
A new leisure area, with 28 thousand square meters, is also being built to serve the Aço community. The space will have squares, playgrounds, sports courts, a skate park, a stage for events, an outdoor gym, gardens and common areas. The idea is to offer not only housing, but also quality of life, well-being and social integration.
The transformation of Aço into a new structured neighborhood in the West Zone is the result of ongoing urban planning and social inclusion work. The project continues with other blocks in different phases of construction, while urbanization works are also ongoing. The interventions aim to recover degraded areas and build a more just, integrated city with a better quality of life for all.
City Hall redevelops more than 30 streets in Honório Gurgel, in the North Zone
Mayor Eduardo Paes also visited the works of the Bairro Maravilha program that are being carried out in the Honório Gurgel neighborhood by the Infrastructure Department. The interventions are concentrated on Travessa Ururaí and on another 30 streets in the neighborhood, which are benefiting from paving, drainage and complete urbanization services. The works aim to improve mobility, reduce flooding and provide greater safety, accessibility and quality of life for the residents of the neighborhood in the North Zone.
– We are going to urbanize 31 streets. In 14 months you will be able to roller skate on these streets. Everything will be in order, with drainage and sewage – said Eduardo Paes.
More than 267 thousand people are being served by the Bairro Maravilha program
The Bairro Maravilha program aims to promote improvements in the urban infrastructure of several neighborhoods in the city, especially in areas that have historically suffered from a lack of public investment. It mainly works with urbanization works, such as street paving, drainage, basic sanitation, construction of sidewalks and improvements in public lighting. More than 50 projects have been delivered throughout the city since 2021 by the City Hall. Ten are still underway in the West Zone and another five are underway in the North Zone. Investments to bring more dignity and development to these regions exceed R$1,2 billion.
Its importance is related to promoting the quality of life of residents, increasing the value of properties, reducing flooding and improving mobility and safety conditions in the benefited neighborhoods. More than 267 people are being served. In addition, Bairro Maravilha contributes directly to social and urban development, reducing inequalities and offering better housing conditions and well-being to the population.
