- The obelisk in Francisco Barbosa Square, in Campo Grande, is undergoing renovation
The square has 2 square meters and has undergone a complete renovation. Photo: Marcos de Paula A historic landmark in the Campo Grande neighborhood, the Obelisk monument in Francisco Barbosa square has been revitalized and handed over to the public. The renovation, carried out by the Municipal Infrastructure Department, is part of the works on the Anel Viário, included in the Campo Grande Mobility Plan. Made of reinforced concrete and covered in stone, the monument pays homage to engineer Alim Pedro, mayor of Rio de Janeiro from September 4, 1954 to November 17, 1955. The surrounding area was also landscaped.
– The construction of the Anel Viário is already a reality for the residents of Campo Grande, with important deliveries such as the underpass, which now has a completely revitalized square with a monument and a skate park. But we still have much more to deliver – says the Secretary of Infrastructure, Jessick Trairi.
Located on Avenida Cesário de Melo, one of the busiest in the region, the 2 square meter square underwent a complete renovation and in September gained a 800 square meter skate park. The urban planning project respected local history, preserving monuments and implementing significant improvements, such as 135 square meters of new pedestrian walkways, a 1 meter lane for cyclists and the planting of 600 square meters of green space.
– Residents of Campo Grande are proud of the local history and its monuments. The revitalization of Francisco Barbosa Square, the Obelisk, the skate park and the requalification of the entire surrounding area are significant for the neighborhood and are part of a mobility project that will transform Campo Grande – said the deputy mayor of the West Zone, Diogo Borba.
In July, the Rio City Hall inaugurated the underpass on Avenida Cesário de Melo, which reduced traffic at the intersection with Estrada do Monteiro and relieved congestion on Rua Professor Castilho. As part of the Campo Grande Mobility Plan, the Municipal Infrastructure Department had already delivered the requalification of Rua Artur Rios, with a new roundabout. The construction of the Anel Viário has investments of over R$286 million and is expected to last until the second half of 2025.
Campo Grande Mobility Plan
The Campo Grande Mobility Plan includes several projects with an investment of almost R$1 billion and completion scheduled for 2026. The interventions will allow for greater vehicle flow in the central region of Campo Grande and surrounding areas, benefiting more than 300 people.
There will be kilometers of new roads, with drainage of storm drains, sidewalks and smooth asphalt are also planned. As well as the connection of Estrada da Posse and Estrada do Tinguí with Avenida Brasil, in addition to the Sete Riachos road loop with Rio's main expressway.
Other interventions include the duplication of the Lameirão road and road improvements on Cesário de Melo and Monteiro. To complete the package, the Largo da Maçonaria and the construction of the Rio-São Paulo Binary Road will also be included.
