The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Infrastructure Department, will begin one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the city center: the construction of the New Popular Market of Uruguaiana. With an estimated budget of R$84,8 million and expected to be completed in 16 months, the project will transform one of the largest popular shopping centers in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The bidding process is scheduled for June 09.

– The Rio City Hall’s goal is for all regularized street vendors in the city center to be located in the New Popular Market, in adequate working conditions, with safety and without risk of fire. It will be a large open-air shopping mall in Uruguaiana – stated acting mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

The proposal calls for the demolition of the existing market and the complete redevelopment of the surrounding area, with the creation of a boulevard that will connect Uruguaiana and Presidente Vargas streets, encouraging pedestrian circulation and promoting greater integration with the urban space.

– The idea behind the new market is to make the place more pleasant and safer for traders and the general public. By better integrating the New Popular Market with the surrounding architecture. With this format, we will be able to contemplate the region’s listed properties. Not to mention that we will have a boulevard that will facilitate the movement of people and a modern fire prevention system that complies with the Fire Department’s legislation – revealed the Secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson Santos.

The new market will be built using a modern metal structure, spread over the ground floor and three mezzanine floors. On the ground floor, the stalls will be organized in identified rows, with two food courts, restrooms, loading and unloading areas, and an anchor store with direct access from the two main roads. The three mezzanines extend into the interior of the space like suspended counters, offering a panoramic view from the ground floor.

The first and second mezzanines will house more commercial and sanitary spaces. The second mezzanine will also have external balconies facing Uruguaiana and Presidente Vargas streets, which will ensure cross ventilation and visual integration with the surrounding area. The third mezzanine will be used by City Hall departments, promoting a greater institutional presence in the area.

The new market's roof will be made of metal, with a lattice structure and trapezoidal aluminum tiles, in line with the Agache Plan, respecting the architecture of the traditional galleries in the historic center.

In addition to the new building, the project includes 10 square meters of urban redevelopment in the surrounding area, with accessible sidewalks and improvements to landscaping and urban infrastructure. The entire complex will feature natural ventilation systems, efficient lighting, water and fire prevention networks, raising the standard of safety and sustainability.

The works will be carried out in four phases, in order to allow the market to continue operating during the process. No worker will be left without a place to work: traders temporarily affected by the interventions will be relocated to temporary locations yet to be defined, ensuring the continuity of activities.

With these changes, Rio de Janeiro City Hall reinforces its commitment to revitalizing the city center and valuing workers in popular commerce. The New Uruguaiana Market will be a modern, safe and dignified space for merchants and for the thousands of Rio residents who pass through the area every day and drive the city's economy.
