The Rio de Janeiro City Hall presented, this Saturday (July 11th), the new Campo Grande Intermodal Terminal, another mobility intervention planned for the West Zone. With an estimated investment of R$ 81,1 million, the structure will be built in an area of 22,200 square meters, between Estrada da Caroba and Rua Campo Grande, and will form, together with the Campo Grande BRT Terminal, a new public transport integration hub in the region. When it becomes operational, it will bring together 33 municipal and intermunicipal bus lines in a single integration point and will facilitate the movement of passengers from the West Zone and the Baixada Fluminense.

– The Campo Grande Intermodal Terminal will concentrate the new buses in the region and improve the quality of boarding, providing more security, better conditions and dignity for passengers in the West Zone. With the new buses, the population will have predictability and quality in the system, in the same way that they have today in the BRTs: to make the same transformation with the regular bus system that we made with the BRTs – declared Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, alongside municipal secretaries and the president of the Rio Municipal Chamber, Carlo Caiado.

The terminal will be served by 21 municipal bus lines from the first phase of the RIO System, the city's new bus transportation concession. These lines will provide local service to the neighborhoods of Campo Grande, Inhoaíba, Cosmos, Paciência, Santa Cruz, and Sepetiba, expanding the availability of trips and connectivity in the region. In addition to municipal service, the terminal will also receive 12 intercity bus lines to promote integration between the capital and the municipalities of Itaguaí, Seropédica, Nova Iguaçu, Mesquita, Nilópolis, and Duque de Caxias.

The proposal aims to expand the integration between municipal and intermunicipal bus lines to allow passengers to make connections more easily, as well as reduce travel time and organize the operation of public transportation in the region. After the bidding process for construction is completed, the works should be executed within two years.

Modern structure integrated with the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system.

Developed in partnership by the municipal departments of Infrastructure and Transportation, the new terminal was planned to reorganize the operation of municipal buses in Campo Grande. It will bring together boarding and disembarking in a comfortable and safe structure. With the capacity to receive approximately 60 buses simultaneously, it was designed to increase operational efficiency and meet the growing demand in the region. The new terminal connects, via a walkway under the railway line, to the Campo Grande BRT Terminal. It will also promote integration between conventional buses and the high-capacity system, which will improve the experience of the thousands of passengers who use public transportation daily.

The terminal will be built on two levels, with independent access and internal integration between the floors. The lower level will have an entrance on Rua Campo Grande, while the upper level will be accessed via Rua Padre Pauwels. Both spaces will also be connected to the Campo Grande BRT Terminal via a walkway to ensure simpler, safer, and more accessible access for users.

On the upper level, covering approximately 13,2 square meters, three covered and accessible platforms will be installed, along with a support area for drivers, a security guardhouse, public and driver restrooms, as well as stairs and an elevator connecting to the lower level. The space will be able to accommodate more than 30 buses simultaneously.

The lower level will occupy approximately 8,9 square meters and will be dedicated to passenger service and operational support. The space will also include covered and accessible platforms, as well as public restrooms and an administrative office for drivers.

In addition to infrastructure geared towards public transportation, the project includes the installation of 10 kiosks for local commerce. The development will also feature a bicycle parking area to expand integration options between bicycles and public transportation, encouraging more sustainable commutes.

The Santa Cruz Imperial Neighborhood Terminal continues with ongoing construction.

Another terminal is also being built in the West Zone: the Imperial Santa Cruz terminal, which will meet the high demand in the region, on a plot of land of more than 17 square meters, with a built area of more than 14 square meters, distributed over three floors, with boarding platforms, circulation areas, shops, parking and bicycle parking. With an investment of R$ 73,7 million, the terminal is expected to be completed and begin operations in the second half of 2027.

The operation will be reorganized, with boarding and disembarking at designated platforms. The structure will have the capacity to accommodate up to 14 articulated buses from the BRT system and ten conventional buses, in addition to minibuses.

Integrated plan to transform mobility in the West Zone.

The construction of the Campo Grande Intermodal Terminal marks another step in the plan to transform mobility in the West Zone, a set of interventions that is reorganizing access to the neighborhood and reducing travel time for those who live and work in the region. In recent years, the City Hall has already delivered projects such as the underpass beneath Avenida Cesário de Melo, the revitalization of Rua Artur Rios, the requalification of Estrada da Caroba, the expansion of Estrada do Tingui to Avenida Brasil, the new access ramp from Estrada dos Sete Riachos to Praça Ana Maria da Silva, and the Professor Moacyr Sreder Bastos Tunnel, the first in Campo Grande's history. At the same time, other structural works are progressing, such as the duplication of the Lameirão Road, the new tunnel under Morro João Vicente, the revitalization of the Monteiro Road and Largo da Maçonaria, and the implementation of the Rio-São Paulo Road dual carriageway with Rua Vitor Alves, which will expand connections with Avenida Brasil, redistribute traffic flow and relieve traffic congestion in the region.

The terminal integrates this new circulation logic, connecting different modes of transport in a neighborhood that concentrates more than 350 residents and functions as one of the main hubs of the West Zone. Added to the road improvements, the new BRT stations, the fleet renewal, and the improvements to the bus system, the works are part of an integrated project to make commutes faster, organize traffic, and keep pace with the growth of Campo Grande with a more modern and efficient mobility infrastructure.
