- Rio City Hall completes works on the first phase of urbanization in Jardim Maravilha, in the West Zone, with the Bairro Maravilha program

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Rio-Águas Foundation, delivered, this Saturday (22/03), the first phase of urbanization works in the Maravilha neighborhood, in Jardim Maravilha, in the city's West Zone. With an investment of R$50,9 million, the intervention included the implementation of drainage infrastructure, sewage networks and water supply, in addition to paving and sidewalks with accessibility on 27 streets in the neighborhood, benefiting thousands of residents.
– The work in Jardim Maravilha represents a major step forward. Some residents will now be able to sleep peacefully, and this is cause for celebration. The work carried out has brought significant improvements. Our priority was to ensure efficient infrastructure for a location historically affected by flooding. To definitively solve the problem, we are adopting an innovative solution inspired by the dikes in the Netherlands, creating a barrier that protects the region. This is a project designed to transform the quality of life of the population and prepare the neighborhood for a safer future – said Mayor Eduardo Paes.
The project represents a significant step forward for the region, which has historically suffered from flooding. 5,3 km of drainage galleries, 10,6 km of sewage systems, 12,4 km of water systems, 49,8 thousand square meters of paving and 27,9 thousand square meters of sidewalks were built.
A leisure area was also built, with a playground for children, on Avenida Barão de Cocais. The interventions transformed an area of the neighborhood equivalent to more than 320 thousand square meters, bringing a better quality of life to residents.
Works in Jardim Maravilha will have a second phase
The next phase of the infrastructure works in Jardim Maravilha will have a sustainable solution to avoid flooding in the region. The interventions were inspired by Dutch projects to contain the floods of the Cabuçu-Piraquê River and provide the infrastructure necessary for the subdivision.
A dike of over 3,4 km will be built around the river, which will function as a large dam around the canal, with a height of up to 2,5 m. To help retain floods, open reservoirs and a river park of around 460 thousand square meters will form a large green area that can be flooded during the rains.
The open “swimming pools” will be able to store around 225 million liters of water, which represents more than 12 reservoirs similar to those in Praça da Bandeira. These structures, together with the dike, will make it possible to contain floods. The canal and reservoir systems will be integrated. Around 30 thousand residents of Jardim Maravilha will benefit from the works.
This Jardim Maravilha project was selected by the New PAC and will receive R$340 million in investment from the Federal Government. The contract for the transfer of resources has been signed and the projects will undergo technical analysis with Caixa Econômica, which will allow bidding.
– We are here to deliver the first phase of Jardim Maravilha, an emblematic region that suffered from historic flooding for many years. In this first phase, we invested approximately R$50 million in paving, sidewalks, river channeling, lighting and a bike path. In addition, the mayor has already secured an investment of approximately R$340 million to continue the next phase of the project – stated the Secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson Santos.
Drainage and urbanization work is completed in Vila Alzira, in Paciência, and City Hall increases investments to reduce flooding in the city
Also this Saturday, the City Hall, through the Municipal Infrastructure Department, inaugurated drainage and urbanization works in Vila Alzira, in Paciência. To improve the capacity of rainwater drainage, 288 meters of storm drains were built on the streets Santa Gentilis, Pedro Pinto, Quinze and Dezesseis. The streets also received 98 meters of drinking water network and 562 meters of sewage. To improve the mobility of residents and vehicle circulation, 1,3 square meters of sidewalks were restored and 2,5 meters of paving were requalified.
The intervention is part of a series of actions to improve mobility and reduce the impacts of rain in different parts of the city. In addition to the interventions in Vila Alzira, which received R$2,6 million in works, the investments in flood prevention made by the City Hall in critical flooding points in the city have already exceeded R$13 million. Since 2021, the City Hall has delivered important drainage works in areas susceptible to flooding. Among them are the interventions on Estrada do Catonho, in Taquara; on Rua Alexandre Calaza, in Vila Isabel; and on Estrada da Pedra, in Guaratiba. In the South Zone, Avenida Borges de Medeiros, in Lagoa, also received significant improvements, reducing the disruptions caused by rain.

More deliveries from the Maravilha neighborhood in the West Zone
In addition to these actions, the City Hall continues to invest in the transformation of the West Zone with the Bairro Maravilha program. Four more projects by the Municipal Infrastructure Department were delivered in the region this Saturday. The locations benefiting were the Estrela D'Alva subdivision in Santa Cruz, and the communities Morada 2001 in Paciência, Foice in Guaratiba, and Caminho da Guarda in Sepetiba, where residents now live in a new reality, leaving behind streets of mud, dirt and dust.
The improvements included the installation of rainwater drainage, a drinking water network, a sewage system, and paving, ensuring paved streets and adequate infrastructure for thousands of people. In the stretches served in the Estrela D'Alva subdivision, in Morada 2001 and in Foice, 58 public places were initially covered. By the end of the works, 87 addresses will have benefited in the three locations. The works are ongoing and the total investment amounts to R$45 million. In Caminho da Guarda, in Sepetiba, 23 streets were requalified, including Beco da Guarda and Travessa Thomás Rodrigues. The works cost R$6,7 million.
The Rio City Hall has completed 48 projects in the Maravilha neighborhood in the West Zone since 2021. Ten projects are still underway and another eight are in the bidding phase. Investments to bring more dignity and development to the region exceed R$880 million.
