This Saturday (June 6th), at Madureira Park, the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, oversaw the start of the work. In addition to the 3 km long garden, the space will also include an Agriculture and Environmental Education Center, which will house a Producer Market and an Environmental Education Center.
Together, the facilities will focus on cultivation, production, and marketing of herbs and vegetables, as well as socio-environmental initiatives, in an area of the park that is currently underutilized. The investment of approximately R$ 3,5 million comes from the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development. The works are expected to last one year and will be carried out by the Municipal Secretariat of Infrastructure.
"Nothing to do with New York or Paris. The world's largest urban garden is in Madureira. We are very proud to say that we will transform 3 kilometers of land into arable areas with people from Serrinha, Honório Gurgel, Madureira, and different communities who will be part of this project," said Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.
The proposal begins with the implementation of the world's largest urban garden, which will be located along Light's right-of-way. The space will be prepared with cleaning and land organization services, followed by the creation of planned garden beds for growing herbs and vegetables. The idea is to structure a productive area that encourages urban agriculture and the sustainable use of the soil.
Next, the plan includes the construction of the Producer's Market, covering approximately 748 square meters. This facility will be a large, open warehouse with 54 stalls for the direct sale of herbs, vegetables, and other products grown by the producers, as well as restrooms, an administrative area, and a storage area. The market's structure will strengthen the connection between producers and consumers.
Another highlight is the implementation of the Environmental Education Center, with approximately 335 square meters. This facility will focus on knowledge exchange and raising awareness about sustainable practices, with space for exhibitions, an auditorium, and two classrooms. Educational activities, workshops, and events can also be held there.
The facilities of the center will be connected by a covered walkway, where an area will be created for the cultivation of aromatic and medicinal herbs. The project also includes the implementation of gardens, the planting of trees, and the installation of bicycle racks around the facilities.
