- Rio de Janeiro City Hall begins construction on new express link to the Campo Grande Ring Road.
The Mobility Plan brings together integrated works, tunnels, viaducts, bridges and road upgrades. The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, started, this Friday (September 11th), the works on the new express link of the second phase of the Campo Grande Ring Road, which is part of the Mobility Plan for the region.
"We're going to create an express, direct connection that will greatly reduce travel time for those in the region, just like the tunnel, which we've already inaugurated and which the population has been using quite a lot," said the mayor.
In this second phase of the Ring Road, a new expressway will be built connecting Estrada da Posse to Avenida Brasil, and will be approximately 4.900 meters long. To connect this road, new viaducts will be constructed and almost three kilometers of new lanes will be added where none currently exist. In addition, an elevated section will be built over João Vicente hill.
"It will be almost five kilometers of road that will continue this emblematic project of the Mobility Plan, which has revolutionized traffic here in Campo Grande," said the Secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson Santos.
The new road will connect to the Professor Moacyr Sreder Bastos Tunnel, Campo Grande's first tunnel, and will form an express link between the neighborhood's center and Avenida Brasil. The project also includes the duplication of Estrada do Lameirão, which will also expand access to the city's main avenue. Nearly two kilometers of widened lanes, drainage, and sidewalks are being implemented on this road.
At the intersection with Estrada da Posse, improvements will be made to facilitate traffic flow, in addition to sidewalk renovations. The bridge over the Rio dos Cachorros will also be replaced with a wider one.
Two other overpasses are being built on Avenida Brasil near the intersection with Estrada do Lameirão. One overpass will serve the flow of those coming from Estrada do Lameirão to access the express lane towards Santa Cruz/Costa Verde, and the other will serve the flow of those coming from downtown Rio to access the Campo Grande neighborhood.
The project also includes the urbanization of existing roads in the surrounding area, with the implementation of new roundabouts, lanes and sidewalks in sections of Rua Campina Grande, Rua Guandu Mirim, Rua Djalma Costa and Rua Jaqueiras.
Mobility Plan moves forward
The Campo Grande Mobility Plan, led by the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat, brings together integrated works, tunnels, viaducts, bridges, and road upgrades to improve traffic, organize circulation, and make commutes faster in the neighborhood.
With resources from the municipality and the Federal Government, totaling an investment of approximately R$ 1 billion, the plan brings together nine structuring mobility projects.
The Ring Road is one of the key components of this plan. In March of this year, the first tunnel in Brazil's most populous neighborhood was completed. The Professor Moacyr Sreder Bastos Tunnel connects Estrada da Caroba to Estrada da Posse and reduces travel time between the two areas from 15 to just 3 minutes during peak hours.
Furthermore, the underpass beneath Avenida Cesário de Melo has already been completed, in addition to the revitalization of Rua Artur Rios, Estrada da Caroba, and recently, the road improvements on Avenida Cesário de Melo and Avenida Joaquim Magalhães.
Other completed projects have improved connections between the Campo Grande neighborhood and Avenida Brasil, such as the new ramp on Estrada dos Sete Riachos and the expansion of Estrada do Tingui.
