The new section is part of the Campo Grande Mobility Plan - Marcelo Piu/Rio City Hall

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall delivered, this Sunday (January 11th), the expansion of Estrada do Tingui to Avenida Brasil, creating a direct link between Campo Grande and one of the city's main road corridors. The intervention expands access and exit options for the neighborhood, redistributes local traffic, and brings more fluidity to the commutes of residents, workers, and those who directly cross the West Zone.

– This project is part of a larger mobility plan for Campo Grande and is one of the most important. Campo Grande is the largest neighborhood in the country and has an entire area where residents previously had to cross almost the entire neighborhood to get in. Now they can come directly via Avenida Brasil, so access will be greatly improved. This is what we will continue to do in this neighborhood, which is a hub of economic development in Rio – stated Mayor Eduardo Paes, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

The new section is part of Campo Grande's Mobility Plan and represents another step in the neighborhood's road restructuring, planned to expand strategic connections, organize urban circulation, and keep pace with the growth of the West Zone. The intervention extends Estrada do Tingui by 1,5 kilometers to Avenida Brasil and also includes the requalification of 1,2 kilometers of the existing section of the road, between Estrada Carvalho Ramos and Rua Asa Branca, which is currently underway.

The project includes the restoration of the pavement and sidewalks, as well as improvements to the drainage system, increasing the capacity for rainwater runoff. In total, the intervention covers 2,7 kilometers in length and approximately 33,7 square meters in area, reinforcing the local road network and contributing to a more balanced distribution of traffic on high-demand roads in the region, such as the Mendanha and Pedregoso roads.

The project also includes the installation of 779 meters of new drainage network, 6,9 square meters of accessible sidewalks, 20,9 square meters of paving, and 2,7 kilometers of cycle path infrastructure. Of this total, 1,5 kilometers were implemented as a cycle lane in the new section, organizing traffic flow and improving mobility conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers in an area of intense urban growth.

– This new stretch of the Tingui Road is yet another option for connecting to Avenida Brasil, the city's main thoroughfare. The nearest exit options were the Campinho Road and the Rio-São Paulo Road. The Tingui Road becomes the third option, facilitating and improving traffic flow for residents of the region – said the Undersecretary of Infrastructure, Carlos Alberto dos Santos.

Wagner Azevedo, a 39-year-old self-employed resident of Campo Grande, celebrated the opening of the road, especially because it includes a bike path.

"This is a very good convenience because it's a space reserved for cyclists, so we don't have to worry about cars. The route is very good, with markings. It's very well signposted," declared Wagner, who will use the bike path daily.

Campo Grande's Mobility Plan advances with new deliveries.

The new section of the Tingui Road adds to other interventions already completed within the scope of Campo Grande's Mobility Plan. The underpass beneath Avenida Cesário de Melo, the revitalization of Estrada da Caroba, and the implementation of the new ramp on Estrada dos Sete Riachos are already operational and have contributed to the reorganization of traffic flow in the region. Another advancement is the tunnel under Morro Luís Bom, the first in Campo Grande's history, which is in its final stages of construction, with the completion of the access viaduct via Estrada da Posse as the final step for its full operation.

The plan continues with ongoing structural interventions, such as the requalification of Cesário de Melo and Joaquim Magalhães avenues; road improvements on Estrada do Monteiro; the duplication and widening of Estrada do Lameirão; the road requalification of Largo da Maçonaria; the dual carriageway of Estrada Rio–São Paulo with Rua Vitor Alves; and the road link that will connect Estrada da Posse with Avenida Brasil.

The set of interventions in the Campo Grande Mobility Plan represents the largest road restructuring effort ever undertaken in the neighborhood, with investments exceeding R$ 1 billion, using resources from the municipality and the Federal Government. The plan focuses on improving access to Avenida Brasil and Avenida Dom João VI, organizing traffic flow, and strengthening urban infrastructure, preparing the most populous neighborhood in the country for more organized and functional growth.

More deliveries of flood control works in the West Zone.

In addition to roadworks in Campo Grande, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall completed flood control work in the Batan community in Realengo this Sunday. The project, carried out by the Rio-Águas Foundation, increases the capacity for rainwater drainage and is part of the city's ongoing efforts to improve urban drainage in the West Zone.

"In addition to the projects we are inaugurating today, we have the PAC Realengo projects to address this major problem of rain," said Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

The project included the installation of 422 meters of new drainage network on Maragogipe, Abuara, and São Dagoberto streets, as well as paving and sidewalk improvements. These interventions continue a phase completed in 2023 and allow the local system to operate in an integrated manner, improving traffic flow and the use of public spaces for residents.

– This was the second phase of the works in Batan. We completed the first phase in 2023 in São Dagoberto. This project that we are delivering today was eagerly awaited by the population, a stretch with a history of flooding. We have already had great results in the most recent rains – stated the president of the Rio-Águas Foundation, João Telles.

The works in Batan are part of the actions in the region, which also includes the PAC Realengo program. This program brings together flood control works on different fronts in the neighborhood, including interventions already underway in Vila Vintém. The program foresees the expansion of the storm drain system and the implementation of a flood containment reservoir, directly benefiting approximately 205 residents of the region.
