Rio City Hall handed over the keys to residents of blocks 4, 5, 6 and 7 of Quadra G, in the Aço community, in Santa Cruz, in the West Zone, this Friday (19/9). Another 64 families in vulnerable situations now live in decent and structured housing.

"The Aço community has become a model of success with this major urbanization project. Morar Carioca do Aço is the symbol of a city government that knows who it governs for. Governing means looking out for those most in need. We know the community's history of living in subhuman conditions. Today, we're opening a leisure area and 64 more apartments, cementing this transformation," stated Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

The City Hall had already delivered blocks 1, 2, and 3 of the same block in July 2025, as well as the 11 blocks of Block F. In total, 18 blocks are inhabited, benefiting 288 families in the region. Morar Carioca do Aço is implemented by the Municipal Urbanization Company (Rio-Urbe), linked to the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat (SMI).

Each building has 16 apartments, each approximately 50 square meters, spread over four floors. The units feature a living room, kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms, a balcony, and a laundry area. The ground-floor apartments are adapted for people with disabilities or reduced mobility.

"I can't believe it. It's such a comfort for the children. Having an apartment like this is a wonderful achievement. I'm speechless. Before, there was no comfort for the family. Now each child has their own bed, I have my own room. We have a beautiful kitchen. From now on, it's all victory, a new life," said supermarket employee Juliana Misael, 33, mother of five and a resident of the Aço community for seven years.

The square will provide leisure and fun for thousands of people.

In addition to the housing units, Rio City Hall inaugurated the community's new square, a space designed for sports, socializing, and well-being. The space features a skate park, a bike path, two multi-sport courts, a children's playground, bike racks, a picnic area, a Senior Citizens' Gym, and fitness equipment, offering leisure options for all ages. 200 trees were planted and over 4,8 square meters of grass were cultivated, helping to green the area, providing shade and green spaces for the community.

"Another delivery of Morar Carioca do Aço, a revolutionary program that is changing the reality of the community. We are delivering 64 more fully furnished apartments, adding to the 288 already delivered. We are also delivering a plaza with over 15 square meters," declared Infrastructure Secretary Wanderson Santos.

Today's deliveries are in addition to the already operational water reservoir, which has a capacity of 3,5 million liters. The structure ensures the water supply for the newly delivered apartments and reinforces the water supply for the entire community.

Urban infrastructure to change life in Aço

Through Morar Carioca do Aço, more than 195 square meters of public space are being redeveloped with urban infrastructure, mobility, and service projects. Advances include the redevelopment of 1,1 km of Rua São Gomário, which improves vehicle and pedestrian circulation, offering greater safety and comfort for daily users. Additionally, 70 square meters of roads will be paved, ensuring more suitable and durable access for residents and visitors.

Mobility is being enhanced with the construction of 2,2 km of bike paths, encouraging sustainable and safe transportation in the region. Sanitation is also underway with the construction of 9 km of sewage systems, along with a pumping station that ensures proper sewage flow and treatment. In addition, a 10 km water supply network has been implemented for the entire community.
