City Hall inaugurates lounging under Avenida Cesário de Melo, which is part of the Campo Grande Ring Road works

Rio City Hall inaugurated this Friday (05/07) the new underpass under Avenida Cesário de Melo, in the West Zone. The work is part of the package of interventions on the Anel Viário, within the Campo Grande Mobility Plan, a project that is transforming the most populous neighborhood in the country and is scheduled for completion in 2026.

Approximately 400 meters long, the new underpass will reduce traffic at the intersection of Avenida Cesário de Melo and Estrada do Monteiro and also relieve traffic on Rua Professor Castilho. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Eduardo Paes, Infrastructure Secretary Jessick Trairi, Deputy Mayor of the West Zone, Diogo Borba, and other authorities.

– Campo Grande is a neighborhood with enormous economic importance for the city. This is the first of many interventions that are already happening and will happen. This will enhance the commerce, industry and service sector here. This is what we want, Rio looking forward – said Eduardo Paes, thanking the City Council for its help in making the works in the Campo Grande neighborhood a reality.

Before the interventions, drivers on Estrada do Monteiro heading towards Avenida Brasil were forced to turn right and go around Praça Francisco Barbosa to access the Alim Pedro Viaduct. Now, drivers simply need to access the underpass, passing under Avenida Cesário de Melo, and exiting on the other side at the entrance to the viaduct.

As part of the Campo Grande Mobility Plan, the Infrastructure Department had already completed the requalification of Rua Artur Rios, which now has a new roundabout. The works also include other important interventions, such as an express connection between Estrada da Caroba and Estrada da Posse, with the construction of a 600-meter tunnel with two galleries under Morro Luiz Bom. The tunnel works are progressing, and the requalification of Estrada da Caroba is nearing completion.

These interventions will allow for greater vehicle traffic flow in the central region of Campo Grande, reducing travel time by half and facilitating movement around the neighborhood. With an investment of R$286 million, the project also includes two kilometers of cycle paths.

Nova Floresta da Posse: a green lung in the heart of Campo Grande

Another major intervention planned is the implementation of the new Posse Forest, a green area in the heart of Campo Grande, with 950 thousand square meters – equivalent to more than 130 football fields. More than 240 thousand trees will be planted and the water sources will be restored, in addition to protecting the native fauna and flora.

Seven urbanization works, with road improvements, begin in Campo Grande

Mayor Eduardo Paes also participated in the beginning of complementary works on the Campo Grande Ring Road. In accordance with the Mobility Plan, seven interventions on important and heavily trafficked roads in the largest neighborhood in the country will be transformed with urban requalification services, improving the flow of traffic in the region. Investments in these works exceed R$200 million.

This is the case of Estrada do Monteiro. The project foresees physical improvements to the road from the new underpass on Cesário de Melo to Estrada do Magarça, providing orderly traffic flow, improvements to intersections, road drainage and orderly bus stops.

The duplication of Estrada do Lameirão has also begun, in the section between Estrada da Posse and Avenida Brasil, with the implementation of a roundabout at the intersection with Estrada da Posse.

Avenida Cesário de Melo will also receive physical improvements at the intersection of Estrada da Caroba and Avenida de Santa Cruz, passing through Rua Joaquim Magalhães. A cycle path will be implemented, and parking spaces and bus stops will be reorganized.

A new loop connecting Estrada Sete Riachos with Avenida Brasil, towards the city center, is under construction. A roundabout will be built to accommodate the flow of traffic coming from Santa Cruz, making traffic more agile.

In addition, on Estrada do Tinguí, physical improvements are being carried out along the road, including a new connection to Avenida Brasil, towards the Center, promoting another exit route from Campo Grande.

Rio-São Paulo binary and Largo da Maçonaria will also be included

The interventions on the Rio-São Paulo Binary Road will resolve a “road snarl” at the intersection between Rio-São Paulo Road and Rio A Road. The implementation will be on Vitor Alves Street, in the final stretch of Rio-São Paulo Road, promoting one-way traffic between the two roads. The intersections will also be better organized on Rio A Road.

As part of the Largo da Maçonaria remodeling project, the intersections on Estrada do Mendanha will be eliminated, improving traffic light times and diverting traffic flow via Rua Tenente Carneiro da Cunha. Another lane will also be installed on Estrada do Mendanha between Largo da Maçonaria and the intersection with Estrada da Posse.

– All of these projects are part of Campo Grande’s mobility package. The Infrastructure Department, CET-Rio and the Transportation Department, with the help of the city councilors, developed all of these projects. We have these projects underway and will soon begin others – said Jessick Trairi.
