- City Hall begins works on Bairro Maravilha in Bonsucesso and Ramos, in the North Zone
Children play on Rua Tupi, in Ramos - Marcelo Piu / Rio City Hall Rio de Janeiro City Hall announced on Tuesday (January 31) the start of urbanization and infrastructure works for the Maravilha Neighborhood Program in Bonsucesso and Ramos, in the North Zone. Thirty-five streets will be revitalized, with paving, drainage and sidewalk services. The City Hall's investments in these two areas of the Rio de Janeiro suburbs exceed R$01 million.
Asphalt resurfacing, drainage installation and repair of sidewalks and curbs are planned for 18 streets in Bonsucesso, including Cardoso de Moraes and Dona Isabel streets and Teixeira de Castro Avenue. The improvements will cover an area of approximately 89 square meters. More than 1.700 meters of drainage will be requalified to improve the capacity of rainwater drainage and reduce flooding in the region.
The Maravilha de Ramos neighborhood project covers 17 streets, including Leopoldina Rêgo Street, which provides access to the São Cosme Viaduct, and Felisbelo Freire Street. More than 78 square meters of urban area will be restored. Approximately 2.400 meters of drainage are being revitalized.
– Through the Bairro Maravilha program, we solved a chronic problem of flooding in the streets, first by replacing all the piping in the streets and then by improving the streets, renovating the sidewalks, making them all the same standard. Then we started with Smooth Asphalt, another program run by the City Hall. It is a requalification of the neighborhood, a matter of dignity for the residents’ coming and going, who will not have to step in mud or water when leaving their homes. And also for people who are going through a difficult financial time, it is difficult to buy their things and lose everything. That is why we fight to prevent this from happening, by providing infrastructure and dignity. We also want to restore this pride of being a suburbanite, of having brand new streets, paved sidewalks, painted streets, that is what suburbanites want, simple things, done well – said the deputy mayor of the North Zone, Diego Vaz.
Resident of Rua Tupi, one of the beneficiaries of the program, in Ramos, maintenance technician João Luiz Silva emphasizes that the program will be of great value to those who live in the region:
– Expectations are high because anything that benefits the neighborhood, the community in general, is good. Sometimes we go a while without assistance. So, when that happens, it’s really helpful. And we have great hope that some things will be resolved. Drainage is essential here. When it rains, things get out of order and are very annoying. Paving the sidewalk is also very good, it just adds to the mix. In the summer, on weekends, residents get together, the sidewalk works as an extension of our homes.
For pensioner Valmicleia Braga, who also lives in Tupi, the program is synonymous with improvement for residents:
– The streets around here are flooded. I’ve even had water above the rim of my car, so I had to take another route. It’s a nuisance. Some residents have water getting into their homes on the streets near the ditch. The Maravilha neighborhood is designed to improve the area.
Investments in the recovery of neighborhoods in the North Zone exceed R$240 million
An urbanization program run by the Municipal Infrastructure Department, Bairro Maravilha is known for giving a new look to the neighborhoods it passes through. In 2022, the initiative reached Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Paciência and Vila Kennedy, in the West Zone. In addition to completely restructured public spaces, these locations also include a square with an outdoor gym for adults and seniors, sports courts and a playground for children. The program's actions are expanding, this time to the North Zone. The city's investments in the recovery of the Rio de Janeiro suburbs exceed R$240 million. There are 13 more projects in the region, in the neighborhoods of Olaria, Bonsucesso, Coelho Neto, Ilha do Governador, Del Castilho, Ramos, Rocha Miranda, Madureira and Caju, as well as Morro do Chaves, in Barros Filho, and the Eternit community, in Guadalupe. With the inauguration of works in Encantado, this January, two projects remain in progress, 10 will be started soon and one is in the study phase.
