- Noel Rosa Tunnel, in the North Zone, begins construction after receiving new lighting with LED lamps
After receiving new lighting, Túnel Noel Rosa will undergo renovations - Marcelo Piu/City of Rio The Noel Rosa Tunnel, in the North Zone, is being completely restored. After receiving new LED lighting, the two galleries will undergo renovations. The repairs will be carried out by the Municipal Infrastructure Department after inspection and assessment of the condition of the concrete structures. The need for improvements was found in areas damaged by pollution and infiltration.
The first intervention is hydraulic washing to check for problems such as leaks, which will be treated with repairs to the drainage system. The technique also allows for the cleaning and unblocking of water gutters. The work includes covering the walls with 12mm cement slabs and repairing the expansion joints and the tunnel floor. Noel Rosa will receive new signage, as well as painting and general cleaning.
Opened in 1975, the 720-meter-long tunnel is one of the city's most important traffic routes, with more than 30 vehicles passing through its galleries every day.
Noel Rosa is the seventh tunnel to have 100% LED lighting in the city. In a public-private partnership, Rioluz installed 863 lights with anti-theft measures, such as shielding the electricity network and installing projectors in the middle of the track to make vandalism more difficult. The tunnel suffered from constant cable thefts and was regularly left in the dark, making the tracks unsafe.
