The protection of Rio de Janeiro residents' personal data has just received a boost. The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has officially announced the new composition of the Municipal Council for the Protection of Personal Data and Privacy (CMPDPP) for the 2025–2027 term (Rio Decree No. 57.191, published on November 17, 2025). The appointment of the new members reinforces the city's commitment to consolidating itself as a national benchmark in the protection of citizens' data.
The Municipal Council is a space for participation by civil society and legislative bodies, including representatives from the OAB-RJ (Brazilian Bar Association - Rio de Janeiro chapter), the Municipal Court of Accounts (TCM), and the City Council, as well as members from the academic, business, and union sectors. Active since 2023, the CMPDPP is chaired by the Municipal Secretariat of Integrity and Transparency (SMIT) and functions as an advisory body responsible for guiding the public administration in adopting practices aligned with the General Data Protection Law (LGPD).
Among the Council's responsibilities are promoting initiatives aimed at raising awareness about the importance of privacy and holding debates on innovative topics, such as the use of artificial intelligence (AI), the protection of children's and adolescents' data, and the use of advanced anonymization techniques. The CMPDPP also plays a central role in protecting information provided by citizens in public services, including the payment of taxes such as IPTU (property tax), scheduling appointments through SISREG (a public registration system), and school enrollment processes. The CMPDPP acts as a "guardian" of users' rights by ensuring that data processing is secure and ethical.

The appointed council members officially took office this Monday (December 8th), in a ceremony held at the OAB-RJ headquarters.
