Mayor Eduardo Paes signed, this Friday (July 8), a cooperation agreement with the City of Rio for the implementation of the Taxi.Rio Cidades application in the municipality of Maricá, in the Metropolitan Region. Developed by the Municipal Information Technology Company of Rio (IplanRio), the application can be downloaded on users' cell phones and allows passengers to request a taxi with up to a 7% discount on the ride.

Maricá is the 9th municipality to sign the agreement to implement Taxi.Rio Cities. The following cities also have access to the application: Petrópolis, Teresópolis, Miguel Pereira, Nilópolis, Volta Redonda, Maceió (AL), Niterói and Campos.

– The government must fulfill its role, investing in something that is economically sustainable, since there is no need for permanent government contributions to this technology. And allow the profits and gains to remain in the hands of the worker. The consumer receives a fairer price, without exploiting the worker. Taxi.Rio is this, an attempt to distribute these gains equally – stated Mayor Eduardo Paes, in a ceremony held at the headquarters of Banco Mumbuca, in Maricá.

Taxi.Rio Cidades has 1,2 million registered passengers and carries out an average of 1 million trips per month in the capital alone. Without charging any service fee to taxi drivers, the tool works as an important lever for the category in the face of competition from transportation apps, which impose a cost of around 40% of the value of the trips on drivers.

– Today is a very special night for the city of Maricá, especially for our taxi drivers. This app will improve the lives of taxi drivers in Maricá and will transform the dynamics of taxi use in the city. With the app, taxi drivers will be able to handle more trips – said the mayor of Maricá, Fabiano Horta.

The ceremony was also attended by Maricá's Secretary of Transport, Douglas Paiva, and the president of the city's Development Company (Codemar), Olavo Noleto, as well as the president of IplanRio, Claudio Fonseca.

Over the past three years, the flow of passengers on the municipal app has increased substantially. The number of users transported in 2019 (2 million), pre-pandemic period, increased by 26% compared to 2021 (2,6 million). More recent data confirms this upward trend. In the first six months of 2022, the number of passengers transported (1,2 million) increased by 36% compared to the same period last year (896 thousand).
