Instituto Pereira Passos and Rice University sign cooperation agreement to enrich digital atlas about Rio de Janeiro

The Pereira Passos Institute, a branch of the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, announced on Tuesday (02/05) an agreement with Rice University, an American higher education institution based in Houston, for cooperation on the imagineRio platform, a searchable digital atlas that illustrates the social and urban evolution of the city throughout its history. With the agreement, the physical collection of XNUMXth century maps of the city will be digitized, georeferenced and vectorized for inclusion in the platform's interactive map and other products.

 

– ImagineRio is already a reference for researching the urban history of the City of Rio. With this cooperation, the product will be better enriched with the cartographic material available at IPP. We are very excited to work with Rice researchers – says the president of the Pereira Passos Institute, Carlos Krykhtine.

 

Created by professors Alida Metcalf and Farès el-Dahdah, in collaboration with the Space Studies Laboratory of the Center for Research Computing at Rice University and with the support of the Moreira Salles Institute (IMS), the website is composed of photos, maps and cadastral plans located in both time and space. In this way, when accessing the website, the user can “stroll” through a timeline and learn about the past of each corner of the city, since its foundation.

 

– With this collaboration, we can start the 4th version of the platform, with the aim of adding more modern data, more places in the cities and also to start bringing historical themes to imagineRio. So, this cooperation will be very good for us, because Rice students can learn more about Rio de Janeiro and people from Rio can also collaborate with us – said Alida Metcalf, professor at Rice University.

 

With this partnership, in addition to making publicly available files that previously only existed in the City Hall's physical collection, it will be possible to date the emergence or disappearance of urban elements in the city, such as some streets and buildings. It will also be possible to create new interactive applications, based on layers of thematic information, both for imagineRio and for Data.Rio, the City Hall's information portal.

 

– This agreement begins at a great time, when the new phase of imagineRio’s evolution is being designed. We will be able to cooperate on the first layers of thematic information for the portal, as well as integrate and build new databases, information and applications for imagineRio and for the SIURB and DATA.RIO complex, based on technical collaboration on Geographic Information System (GIS) platforms – explains Felipe Mandarino, Technical Coordinator of City Information at IPP.
