City Hall assists IBGE in Census research - Disclosure The City of Rio, IBGE, Instituto Data Favela and Central Única das Favelas (CUFA) have created a partnership to finalize the 2022 Demographic Census in Rio's favelas. This Saturday (25/03), starting at 10 am, the teams will be in Rocinha, in the South Zone, and in Penha, in the North Zone, with the “Favela on the Map” action to encourage the population to participate in the survey and to clarify doubts about the process, which is in its final stage.
– The Pereira Passos Institute, part of the City Hall, has a long-standing partnership with the IBGE. With our experience with programs such as Social Territories, which operate daily in these locations, we train highly specialized community census takers in the Rio de Janeiro area. We can also support the IBGE with a network of very powerful local institutional knowledge – explains the president of the Pereira Passos Institute, Carlos Krykhtine.
Teams from the Pereira Passos Institute, the Subprefectures of the North and South Zones, the Special Secretariat for Youth (JUVRio) and the Special Secretariat for Women's Promotion Policies will be working on mobilization actions with the communities.
– This joint action is a demonstration that IBGE spares no effort or resources in seeking public or private partnerships capable of adding value to the Census, to Brazil, and to Brazilians. We are doing an incredible and unprecedented job in the history of the Census, despite all the challenges and difficulties we have faced, which have not made us back down – says Cimar Azeredo, president of IBGE.
In the North Zone, the event will take place at Praça São Lucas, in the Penha Complex. In the South Zone, the stand will be located at Exit B of the São Conrado subway station, near Rocinha.
– Census data is essential and serves as an indicator to guide public policies and guide decision-making by managers. That is why it is so important that all households in Rocinha are registered and that we are part of this task force to mobilize the entire population – explains the deputy mayor of the South Zone, Flávio Valle.
Partnership extends until collection is completed
In addition to the weekend activities, the City of Rio is also working on the day-to-day activities of the 2022 Census. The Pereira Passos Institute has made agents from the municipal program Territórios Sociais, residents of these communities, available to help with the search. The main objective is to find people who were absent at the time of the first visit or who even refused to answer the questionnaire. Former agents of the municipal program, with experience in household surveys in the 10 largest favela complexes in the city, were hired by the IBGE as census takers.
The Secretariat for Women's Policies and Promotion is participating in the action by helping to disseminate information by contacting community leaders in the region and posting IBGE material in the Salas Mulher Cidadã and Casas da Mulher Carioca. The team from the Pacto pela Juventude project, from JUVRio, will mobilize young people from the Rocinha and Maré centers to raise awareness among the population about the importance of the Census. Approximately 30 people (13 young people and 2 coordinators from the center, totaling 15 in each) will be providing support throughout the survey, until the end of March.
