  • The award values the best doctoral and master's theses and dissertations on the state of Rio

The 15st FRIPERJ-FAPERJ – IPP Award was presented this Friday (XNUMX), in the auditorium of Casa Firjan, in Botafogo, for the best doctoral and master's theses and dissertations on the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Metropolitan Region. The award is a collaboration between the Pereira Passos Institute (IPP), of the City of Rio; the Forum of Rectors of Public Education Institutions of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FRIPERJ) and the Research Support Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ).

– We already have experience in producing an award focused on the city of Rio de Janeiro and when we were approached to organize this award, there was no way we could refuse this request. The Judging Committee was extremely competent, nominated by the universities and we managed to achieve a significant increase in entries. High-quality works were submitted, and this award symbolizes the excellence of the studies being produced in the state – explains Carlos Krykhtine, president of the Pereira Passos Institute.

The IPP organized the competition at the request of the nine Rectors of FRIPERJ and, with the support of FAPERJ, hired a panel of judges made up of doctors nominated by several universities. In addition to representatives from the organizing institutions, the event was also attended by the Secretary of Science and Technology of the City of Rio, Tatiana Roque, and Professor Vinicius Cardoso, Director of Education and Culture at FIRJAN.

A total of 242 works were selected for the competition, including 141 Master's dissertations and 101 Doctoral theses. Twelve winners were chosen, divided into first and second place for Doctorate and Master's degrees, seven honorable mentions and one special honorable mention for a work that addresses the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

– On the 19th, we completed one year of FRIPERJ, which arose from the need for unity between these public education institutions. More than defending ourselves from challenges, we understood that we could use the expertise and knowledge acquired to propose guidelines for our state. We created this award as a step towards our consolidation – explains Roberto de Souza Rodrigues, Rector of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro and president of FRIPERJ.

The big winner in the doctoral category was the work “The production of ‘Mães do Crack’: deconstructions and displacements”, by Zelia Freire Caldeira, a doctoral student in the Postgraduate Program in Public Policies and Human Formation at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (PPFH – UERJ). The work, which received a prize of R$18 thousand, studies the logic of public policies instituted in Brazil, related to the care practices of pregnant women, crack users living on the streets in Rio de Janeiro.

– When we were approached to form this partnership, we immediately joined. As a regional agency, FAPERJ needs to focus on the state of Rio de Janeiro. So, this initiative is in line with our mission to disseminate the high-quality knowledge that has been produced here – added Jerson Lima da Silva, president of FAPERJ.

Second place in the PhD category went to “Paths for building a new development strategy: an evolutionary approach to the regional innovation system of the State of Rio de Janeiro,” by Guilherme de Oliveira Santos, a PhD student in the Postgraduate Program in Public Policies, Strategies and Development (PPED) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The work was awarded R$12.

The first place in the Master's dissertations went to Leandro Galheigo Damaceno, with “Institutional trajectory and inequality in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro”, also a master's student at PPED – UFRJ, who was awarded a prize of R$10.
