Social Territories Program reaches five more communities in the North and West zones of the city

The Social Territories program, present in the ten largest favela complexes in the city, will begin serving residents of five more regions this Monday (12/06): Vila Sapê, Canal do Anil and Comunidade do Aço, in the West Zone, and Muquiço and Travessa Everest, in the North Zone. Implemented through a partnership between the City Hall and UN-Habitat – the United Nations Human Settlements Program, the initiative benefits the most vulnerable families in areas with the lowest social indicators in Rio. By the end of this month, 12 new locations will be covered by this action.

The Social Territories program involves several departments and agencies of the City Hall and aims to include families who are not yet receiving public services in municipal services. The program is present in ten favela complexes (Rocinha, Alemão, Maré, Lins, Jacarezinho, Penha, Chapadão, Pedreira, Cidade de Deus and Vila Kennedy) and also in the communities of Providência and São Carlos, in the city center.

With the expansion, the goal is for the program's protocol to be applied in 616 favelas, 87 housing complexes and 144 irregular subdivisions, benefiting more than one and a half million people.

In the locations where it is present, the program has already conducted 144.209 interviews. Around 42 families have been monitored, 26.886 reported a situation of food insecurity and 25.830 were in a situation of extreme poverty, without registration in the Single Registry. Once identified, these people are referred, for example, for inclusion in public services and benefits.

The program is managed by a committee coordinated by the Pereira Passos Institute, with representatives from the Departments of Health, Education, Social Assistance, Housing, Community Action, Culture, Work and Income, Urban Planning, Youth and Women's Policies and Promotion.
