Mapa da Mulher Carioca Project is launched to portray the reality of more than 3,6 million Cariocas

Map of the Carioca Woman - Reproduction Rio de Janeiro City Hall launched the Mapa da Mulher Carioca Project this Thursday (08/04) at the Palácio da Cidade in Botafogo. Led by the Special Secretariat for Women's Policies and Promotion, the initiative aims to portray the reality of the city's more than 3,6 million women and, thus, ensure greater effectiveness of public policies and services for this segment of the population.
The project is in partnership with the Pereira Passos Institute (IPP) and involves nine municipal departments (Education, Health, Transportation, Urban Planning, Social Welfare, Finance and Planning, Youth, Labor and Income, and Culture), in addition to the João Goulart Foundation. These institutions will be part of the Working Group that will meet every two weeks to create the map.
The study is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The goal is to help city managers identify the priorities and needs of women in the city. This will contribute to the development of more inclusive and integrated public policies and services to combat violence against women and promote women in Rio.
– Data is essential in the development of public policies and services. There is a lot of data in the different municipal departments, but it is not yet treated with a specific focus on women. We will map and get to know the women of Rio de Janeiro in all territories and in their particularities to also understand their needs – stated the Special Secretary for Policies and Promotion of Women, Joyce Trindade.
Through regionalized analyses, the map will be able to relate social and statistical information, ensuring better planning and budgeting for the city in light of the various existing inequalities.
– I am very happy about this moment, because it is rare to see a government that prioritizes women in its construction. And the Mapa da Mulher Carioca is an instrument of social change that we want to promote, implement, disseminate and, above all, influence in the right places. As a woman who comes from the outskirts, from the West Zone of Rio, I know how essential data is for us to bring qualified public services to the territories – declared Joyce Trindade.
Technical Coordinator of Special Projects at IPP, Andrea Pulici, highlighted, in her speech, the importance of partnership and studies and reading of regionalized indicators for the assertive construction of public policies.
Why build a budget that thinks about women in the city?
According to the United Nations (UN), Gender-Responsive Budgeting (GSP) seeks to fairly allocate the resources needed to implement policies that create conditions for women to exercise their rights equally to men, as well as transparency in the use of public funds.
Public data
The map also seeks to fill a gap in terms of dissemination of public information, expanding understanding of the differences between the realities of women in the city's territories and facilitating the appropriation of available data by the population, organized civil society, academia and other interested groups.
