Rio de Janeiro City Hall declares Shirley Restaurant, in Leme, a cultural heritage site.

Plaque recognizing Carioca Cultural Heritage - Photo: Rafael Catarcione / Rio City Hall Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes presented the traditional blue plaque to the Shirley Restaurant in Leme this Sunday (November 23). With this recognition, the restaurant becomes part of the Carioca Cultural Heritage Circuit, an initiative of the Rio Heritage of Humanity Institute (IRPH) aimed at preserving and valuing emblematic places in the city's history.
Founded in 1954 by Spanish immigrants, Restaurante Shirley was born from traditional recipes brought from Galicia and became a benchmark for Iberian cuisine in Rio. The name Shirley honors the actress Shirley Temple, an idol of its founder, and remains a symbol of a restaurant recognized for its friendly service, consistent cuisine, and fidelity to the origins that have sustained its history for decades.
The initiative recognizes the cultural relevance of Restaurante Shirley in Rio's history and reinforces the City Hall's commitment to preserving the municipality's tangible and intangible heritage. The restaurant now joins other establishments already included in the program, such as Churrascaria Majórica, Casa Clipper, Confeitaria Colombo, Rio Scenarium, and Adegão Português.
