  • Youth Center hosts Plenary Meeting of Women and Youth in the Post-COP30 Biomes
The initiative is the result of collaboration between different actors in the public sphere - Laryssa Lomenha/JUVRio

The Women and Youth Plenary in the Post-COP30 Biomes was held last Thursday (April 9th) at the Casa da Juventude Centro, located in the Gamboa neighborhood. The initiative is the result of collaboration between different actors in the public sphere, initiated during the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), which brought together demands from women and young people with the aim of strengthening the public debate on climate justice, gender equality, and youth leadership. The meeting represented the Atlantic Forest biome and is part of a national mobilization agenda focused on strengthening social participation in climate issues.

The plenary session was held by the National Youth Secretariat of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Women, the Municipal Youth Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro (JUVRio), and the Young Climate Champion of the COP30 Presidency (PYCC), with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The initiative seeks to broaden social participation and strengthen dialogue between actors and territories involved with the climate agenda in Brazil, as well as promote the exchange of experiences and collective construction among women and young people from the six Brazilian biomes: Amazon, Cerrado, Caatinga, Atlantic Forest, Pantanal, and Pampa.

In the morning, the themes of territory, climate justice, and inequalities were debated in a panel moderated by Pâmela Mercia, from the Instituto Todos Juntos Ninguém Sozinho (All Together, No One Alone Institute). The speakers included Tatiana Castelo Branco, PhD in International Relations; Gaio Jorge, delegate for the Atlantic Forest biome and member of the Criação and PerifaLab collectives; Lyvia Leite, from the Instituto Mirindiba; and Michelle Ferretti, from the Instituto Alziras. In the afternoon, participants divided into working groups to develop proposals on the topic.

Present were the Secretary of Youth of Rio de Janeiro, Gabriella Rodrigues; the youth champion of COP30, Marcele Oliveira; the Municipal Secretary of Policies for Women of Rio, Mariana Xavier; councilors Salvino Oliveira, Tainá de Paula and Maíra Santana; as well as Maynara Nafe, Director of Articulation and Coordination of Youth Programs and Projects and advisor to the Executive Secretariat of the Ministry of Women.
