  • Using a helicopter, the Secretariat for the Environment and Climate and the PM demobilize illegal landfill in Vargem Grande
The degraded area is around 50 thousand square meters, which corresponds to five official football fields - Disclosure

The Municipal Secretariat for the Environment and Climate (SMAC) carried out a major operation on the morning of Tuesday (25/10), with the support of the Military Environmental Police, to demobilize a clandestine landfill of rubble in the Santa Luzia community, in Vargem Grande. The operation was supported by a PM helicopter. Reports of the irregularity were sent to the Subprefecture of Barra, Recreio and Vargens.

Inspectors from the SMAC Environmental Defense Coordination Office identified extensive degradation of the area, as well as the removal of vegetation and the filling in of a river. An illegal marble factory was also closed in the community. Other inspection agencies had already tried to access the site to combat the irregularities, but without success, since people with radio transmitters warned of the arrival of the teams, causing the workers to flee. This time, the teams managed to arrive from above and caught the irregular activity.

– This is a real environmental crime that can result in fines ranging from R$5 to R$5 million. We will continue to monitor the situation to identify and seize the machines and punish those responsible – stated the Environmental Defense coordinator, José Maurício Padrone.

The degraded area is approximately 50 square meters, which corresponds to five official football fields. The deputy mayor and municipal secretary of Environment and Climate, Nilton Caldeira, highlighted the damage caused by the illegal action to the residents of the region.

– Using the land for illegal landfill only brings harm to the residents. The canal constantly overflows and prevents Rio Águas from carrying out the drainage work in the canal. A degrading activity like this could only operate if there were the proper environmental license, in accordance with current legislation, in addition to technical monitoring, which is not the case with what the team found in the region.

Two workers and a supervisor were taken to the 42nd DP (Recreio).
