Copacabana hosts a Tree Counter that displays, with daily updates, saplings planted in Rio.

More than just a marker, the initiative makes visible a continuous effort to expand the city's green spaces - Press Release The Municipal Secretariat for the Environment and Climate (SMAC) launched, this Thursday (March 19th), in Copacabana, the Tree Counter. The panel is installed on the facade of a building at Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, 44, corner of Rua Princesa Isabel, and will display, with daily updates, the number of seedlings planted in the municipality. The tool starts counting at 386.475 seedlings, planted since 2023.
More than just a marker, the initiative makes visible a continuous effort to expand the city's green areas, with a direct impact on thermal comfort, air quality, and the population's quality of life.
The total includes actions carried out on different fronts, such as environmental restoration projects, recovery of conservation units and urban afforestation programs, such as Planta+Rio and Bosques Cariocas, in addition to other environmental initiatives.
Each seedling planted and cared for represents a direct investment in the present and future of Rio. The counter, in this sense, serves as an invitation for the public to closely follow this progress and understand the scope of the public policies that underpin this transformation.
The Secretary of Environment and Climate, Tainá de Paula, emphasizes the goal of transforming citizens into partners of the City Hall in this counting process.
– We want the population to closely follow this process and participate in the effort to make the city greener. This action reflects the progress of the city's climate policies, especially marked by the beginning of the extreme heat protocol work at City Hall. On the environmental agenda, Rio de Janeiro has been consolidating work to bring the debate on climate democracy with great momentum, and promoting planting in various regions of the municipality is a mission of the Secretariat of Environment and Climate.

Plant+River: pThe program, in partnership with the Parks and Gardens Foundation (FPJ), aims to plant 200 seedlings by 2028. Launched in December 2025, it already has the direct participation of residents.
Carioca Forests: The initiative expands urban vegetation cover and combats heat islands, reducing the impacts of thermal stress and promoting local biodiversity.
Reforest Rio: It brings together the main ecological restoration initiatives of the municipality, focusing on environmental recovery, expansion of green areas and addressing climate change. Among its actions, the Reforestation Task Force, created in 1986, stands out.
Green Corridors: It envisions the creation of ecological corridors that connect vegetation in urban areas and contribute to reducing temperatures by providing shade for sidewalks and streets.
Planting the Future: It promotes the participation and reflection of children from municipal schools and social projects on the importance of coastal dunes, with lectures and the planting of seedlings along the Rio de Janeiro coastline.
Urban Parks: In addition to the SMAC projects, urban parks maintain green areas and offer thermal comfort to visitors. Among them are the Ana Gonzaga West Park, in Inhoaíba, under construction by Rio-Urbe, linked to the Infrastructure Secretariat; the Susana Naspolini Realengo Park, which will undergo expansion; and the Arlindo Cruz Piedade Park, already delivered by the same department. The Deodoro Radical Park is under the responsibility of the Sports and Leisure Secretariat.
