Municipality of Rio updates parameters for the protection of threatened species of fauna and flora

Grumari Municipal Park: 175 species of flora - Gustavo de Paula / Disclosure The preservation of wild animals and plants will follow new parameters in the city of Rio. The measure, established by decree, follows the standards of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and includes an updated list of rare species of fauna and flora. By adopting the organization's standards, the city can be sure that a given species is at risk, guaranteeing the City Hall's security against challenges in licensing processes, for example. The older lists – the latest is from 2000 – gave rise to questions from entrepreneurs.
The decree from the Municipal Department of the Environment replaces a previous one from 1997. The new text also reinforces the importance of intensifying care for wild animals.
The capital, which is home to two enormous urban forests, Pedra Branca and Tijuca, has 28% of its surface area covered by the green of the Atlantic Forest. There are 63 federal, state and municipal conservation units in its territory. The city has 55 critically endangered animals, such as the Notholebia minimus, known as cloud fish, present in the Vargens region. In addition, 70 plants are threatened, such as the bromeliad Vriesea botafogensis Mez, present in the Municipal Park of the Rio de Janeiro Landscape.
