Operation Prainha-Grumari Restoration begins this Saturday

The Rio City Hall, through the Department of the Environment, the Department of Public Order (SEOP), the Municipal Guard, CET-Rio and the Barra Subprefecture, announces a series of measures to combat irregularities and public disorder in Prainha and Grumari, in the West Zone of the capital, starting in the early hours of this Saturday (23/01). New signage will show visitors the capacity of the parking lots at the sanctuaries. If there are 800 spaces available (600 in Grumari and 200 in Prainha), a gate will be closed, no longer allowing cars to enter the Prainha and Grumari parks. The closure may occur on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, starting at 8 am. The signage operation will be the responsibility of the Municipal Guard, guided by the park managers.

The municipal secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Cavaliere, highlights the special character of Prainha and Grumari, which have been protected by conservation units for 22 years. He adds that these areas have suffered greatly due to uses that are completely incompatible with conservation. The region has records of almost 270 species of birds and a significant presence of species that are endemic to the Atlantic Forest (which only occur in that area) or are threatened with extinction.

– Prainha and Grumari are parks, they have specific rules and need to have their natural potential restored. The anything goes that was prevailing in the region is over. This is a demand from the population. We will be tough in defending the environment. We will start with the capacity established by CET-Rio and, from there, we will monitor it based on the protocols determined by the Health Department to assess possible reduction – says Cavaliere.

The Prainha-Grumari Restoration operation will involve 16 traffic agents from the City Hall, including Municipal Guards and CET-Rio, four police cars and four motorcycles, who will work to maintain traffic flow, monitor traffic and provide information about the diversion to visitors. The City Hall Operations Center (COR) will monitor the entire area surrounding the closed area and diversion with cameras and adjust traffic lights, with the aim of ensuring that traffic jams are avoided.
