Land in Irajá is the target of an Environmental operation - Disclosure

An operation by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall's Department of Environment and Climate, in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Department and the Military Environmental Police, uncovered several environmental crimes on the morning of Wednesday (March 29), including deforestation, earthmoving using machinery, and river diversion and landfilling. The site is located on Presidente Dutra Highway 03, in Irajá, in the North Zone of Rio. The interventions were being carried out by the Brazilian Autonomous Road Transport Cooperative (Cobrascan). The company had already been notified, summoned, and fined several times for failing to comply with the work stoppage.

Municipal Secretary of Environment and Climate, Tainá de Paula, stated that no drainage can be blocked, filled in or diverted without a project approved by the city hall, as it can cause flooding.

– The Secretariat seized four tractors at the site, and those responsible were sent to the Environmental Protection Department, to register an occurrence for the crimes of disobedience to legal orders and environmental crime, in accordance with the Environmental Crimes Law (9.605/98) – highlighted the secretary.

According to the SMAC Environmental Defense coordinator, José Maurício Padrone, the works had already been embargoed, but the company ignored all the administrative records:

– The tractors continued to work punctually, on random days, to deceive the inspection. Today, our teams were successful in seizing the tractors and taking those responsible to the Environmental Police Station. They will be held accountable for the environmental crimes.

Reports of environmental crimes can be sent to the Secretariat for the Environment and Climate by calling 1746, at Rio City Hall, which operates 24 hours a day.
