City Hall sets fire to two tons of irregular materials on wild beaches in the West Zone

The Municipal Department of the Environment set fire to two tons of irregular materials, collected 850 kilos of garbage, fined one person and removed several illegal camping and commercial tents, this Tuesday (09/02), on the wild beaches of Perigoso, Meio and Funda, located in the Grumari Municipal Natural Park, in the West Zone of Rio.

The objective of the operation, between the neighborhoods of Grumari and Barra de Guaratiba, was to crack down on camps in a protected area and remove illegal liquor stalls. The beaches of Perigoso, Meio and Funda are fully protected – Grumari Park is managed by the Municipal Department of the Environment.

– These are protected areas, the city’s treasures, that need to be looked after. This is yet another tough action to defend the environment – ​​said the municipal secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Cavaliere.

The main materials collected were beer cans, PET bottles and biscuit bags. The operation was supported by the Environmental Police, the Rio Municipal Guard and the Harbor Master's Office. The teams, with 50 people, reached Praia do Perigoso by sea and by land. By sea, one group docked on a Harbor Master's boat; and by land, the team had to travel for about an hour along a difficult-to-access trail.

Some of the material was seized, placed in inflatable boats belonging to the City Hall and transported to the Port Authority's vessel. The materials used to build clandestine tents were set on fire by the inspectors. The practice is permitted by federal decree 6514/08, which states in its article 111 that the products, including wood, by-products and instruments used in the commission of the infraction may be destroyed or rendered useless when transportation and storage are unfeasible.
