A working group is being formed at Rio City Hall to evaluate, identify and create projects on the use of bicycles and other small, non-polluting means of transport, such as roller skates, scooters and skateboards. In ten days, representatives from nine municipal bodies should be appointed to begin the meetings.

With 458 kilometers of bike paths and more than four thousand bike racks, the city wants to use this infrastructure to improve urban mobility in a sustainable way. To do this, the members of the working group will have to analyze the current system and propose strategies for its expansion, conservation and integration with public transportation.

The working group will also have to propose system regulations and submit suggestions that encourage the use of non-polluting means of transport. The proposal also takes into account the city's commitment to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, its vocation for sustainable urban transport and the investments already made in cycle paths, cycle routes and shared lanes.

According to a study on the Impact of Bicycle Use in Rio, conducted in 2018 by the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (Cebrap), 36% of bus trips could be made by pedaling. However, in Rio, people still frequently use the bus to get around. Regarding the routes, 27% are up to 5 kilometers long and 9% are between 5 and 8 kilometers long.
