Irregular constructions violate the law on environmental crimes - Rio City Hall

An operation carried out this Thursday (15/04), by the Municipal Secretariat of Environment, knocked down four irregular constructions, which violated the law on environmental crimes (9.605/1998), in addition to fences and posts demarcating lots in Praça Seca, West Zone of the city.

According to environmental inspectors, the tactic typically used by criminal groups in the region is to occupy a public area with residents and then expel them to build commercial spaces, since it is a road with a large circulation of people and vehicles. The size of the invaded area is approximately 10 thousand square meters and is located on Rua Cândido Benício, in front of the Vila Olímpica de Mato Alto, in Praça Seca. A team from the Environmental Defense Coordination also closed down an illegal dump on the same land.

The closure of the landfill was the second action by the Environmental Defense Department in the area in a 33-day period. In March, 20 tons of illegally discarded waste were collected, and this time, the agents collected another seven tons. In addition to the agents from the Department of the Environment, the Jacarepaguá Subprefecture, Comlurb, CET-Rio and military police from the 18th BPM (Jacarepaguá) participated in the action. The Center for Zoonosis Control removed 50 pigs from the site.

The irregular disposal of waste causes flooding, loss of drainage infrastructure due to clogging of galleries and silting of canals in the region, in addition to visual pollution and increased costs for the public administration to carry out removal. The waste found at the site consisted of different types of materials used in renovations, repairs and demolition of construction sites. There was also debris from land excavation. Comlurb transported the waste to a licensed landfill, which is the correct destination for the disposal of construction waste.

The municipal Department of the Environment estimates that around 2,7 tons of construction waste are generated daily in the city of Rio. Of this total, 1,5 tons are dumped illegally in clandestine landfills or public roads.
