The building occupied a public area of 1.500 square meters - Rio City Hall

The City's Municipal Department of the Environment, in yet another action to combat environmental irregularities, demolished, this Wednesday (10/03), an irregular construction of 10 apartments, whose three-story project foresaw the construction of another 20, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, West Zone of Rio.

Built on a drainage channel of the Piabas Canal tributary, which flows into the Morto River, the building occupied a public area of 1.500 square meters, with a high risk of collapse and flooding, where construction is not permitted. To avoid irreversible damage to the area and the environment, the City Hall took all possible measures to halt the construction.

– We are committed to the strict defense of the environment and occupations in environmentally protected areas will not be tolerated – pointed out the City's Secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Cavaliere.

The owner of the site, who did not have a license for the work, nor authorization from a responsible professional, had already been notified of the environmental crime – the footings were obstructing the natural bed of the watercourse, causing strangulation and silting of that section – and instructed to stop and demolish the irregular construction.

During the operation, which had the support of the Military Police, Rio Luz and CET-Rio, a lane of Estrada do Pontal was closed so that a hydraulic excavator could carry out the demolition. CET-Rio controlled traffic in the area.
